Sure you can add the 256 stick. It won't hurt at all.

While at one time we were limited to matched pairs when installing RAM todays Sys Bds are a lot more flexible. The only caveat I can see is that the RAM should all have compatible Buss speeds. If the 256 you add is slower than the 512 already there it may cause more harm than good. It won't cause a crash but may actually slow response slightly. Put the stick in and boot it up. If the bios recognizes it and gives you a thumbs up you're in clover. If not you simply take the stick back out. No harm, no foul.

You should be fine. You can mix'n match memory stick sizes, and speed. You can go to www.crucial.com to check how much you can add and the speeds your computer can support. They have a neat little application you can install and it will find that info out for you.

Yes, you can do that. You can add whatever size you want, as long as the motherboard supports it. Make sure you get the same speed as the other stick.
