Patrick, I bet you drink. Child abuse is never the right answer
You need to take a serious look at marijuana, look at both sides of the debate, marijuana users don't have withdrawal symptoms, unlike both cigarettes and alcohol. Marijuana has been found to NOT cause cancer (when taking out the subjects who also smoked cigarettes). Hemp is more environmentally friendly then cotton for clothes, lumber for paper, and oil for energy. Look it up before you form an opinion

easy take all the non-violent drug offenders and let them out of jail. That would dramatically lower the pop. of the prisons. Then legalize and tax marijuana for personal use, if its readily available there won't be a need for a black market. Then for all other drugs, if they are busted for an amount that is for personal use and they weren't involved in a violent crime then give them a ticket and take their stuff.

Sounds good. Though I don't use it myself, I don't see why people should be jailed for using or selling it. However, if it's decriminalized, it should still be regulated and taxed the same as prescription drugs, alcohol or cigarettes. It isn't really benign, and like any pharmaceutical drug it has side effects. Since it is an addictive substance, individuals generally cannot be trusted to act rationally or in their best interest when it comes to issues of the drug's usage.

How to lower Prison Population?
A more efficient Death Row System with initial Conviction including DNA Proof, One, and only one Appeal. Then Swift Execution of Justice. No more Year upon year sitting in Death Row with Appeal after ad nausium appeal!

Absolutely! And also legalize Inner change, a Prison Fellowship program that allows prisoners to voluntarily learn Christian faith over time. This program reduces recitivism (retuning to jail) by 50% but was recently outlawed by a judge and is under appeal.

Deport Illegal Alien Invaders already in prison
It would free up to 25% of the space
Not too many Pot smokers in prison
Just some dealers, growers, and smugglers
Got MM card in Oregon so I really do not care

Do you have any idea how many prison inmates are [in] there solely for marijuana offenses?
But beyond that, your premise is that prison populations should be lowered. Where did you read that that would be a good thing?

1) It would NOT materially lower prison populations, sorry but the drug sentencing laws typically all for prison for two or three time losers - Grateful Dead concertgoers aren't that unlucky. The mandatory sentencing laws are an end-around having to prove the violent crime when the witnesses are too scared or too dead to testify. It's easy to prove that the murderous gang member also had drugs on him.
2) That said, while I'll never touch the stuff, and while if my kids ever touch it I'll beat the **** out of them, if you want to ruin your own life go ahead.

Give away free drugs and free prostitutes. The sickest of the sick would forever be busy doing drugs and sex. They would have no time for crime and gangs.
