It is often all of too easy to get any information you desire on most any one you want.
Do you have some one's SSN ? the amount they will get back in thier fed. return? and thier filing stats? if so you know when they get thier taxes.
do you want some one's SSN? if so it cost $38. and you will have thier name, number, employment, marital stats, SSN, address, and the names of all thier neighbors.
Sure this is helpful when we want to know what the ex is doing, but what if you are the ex?
do you think the Internet is a tool to hurt people?
are people misusing the internet and the information it provides?
Please tell me what you think.

The Internet is a wonderful tool for information and entertainment, but yes it can be used for malicious purposes. Are there people that are abusing their priviledge to use the Internet, most definitely!

The Internet is most definitely a dangerous animal. Especially since there are really no guiding forces/laws to prohibit certain activities. For example defaming your high school principal on FaceBook (which was done recently and lead to the punishment of some 20 students) should be prohibited.
But the question I would bring up is on the flip side of this: What would the Internet look like if there were strict rules and regulations about what someone can and can't do? There is already an attempt by the US Government to "lock down" the web and turn it into a more organizational Intranet. And in response there have already been reports of a few open source organizations running fiber cables of their own to counter this activity. A rouge or guerrilla Internet if you may.
The Internet should be a place of free expression. But "beware what you express!" Right now, the Internet is nothing more than a rabid dog running loose.

The question is a good one and deserves a good answer not just a one liner. I use my computer to write a weekly news letter, no harm from me. I research the subject that I write about in my commentary, again no harm, If I take a trip some where unfamiliar to me I get directions from the Internet no harm.
I think that folks that go to these sex chats may or may not be hurting themselves. Married folks talking trash with another married person, only not to their spouse, this is harmful.
These really weren't your question. Your question is ever so much more important. You speak of the access to your very private information. There is very little on line that you couldn't have accessed before there were any computers. I worked at a gas station over 40 years ago. People were using credit cards then. You could put the card through the card machine and take it and have the person sign the slip and you had a copy. If I wanted I could find out what size clothing you wear from your shoes to under and outer wear including a hat. If a person wants your information they are going to get it. I will admit that the computer may make it more convenient, but all of the things that you and I find to be very private were already there.
I am a hunter, I spent 20 years in the military, I understand weapons. I will tell you that no gun has ever killed a person. A person could use a gun to kill another person but the gun didn't do the killing. the killer could have used a rolled up news paper to kill a person with it. If you use the computer as we are using it right now then I say it is fine, when I hunt deer the gun is fine, but just as if I killed a person with my rifle I could use the computer to do evil as well,....but it is just a tool

I think the internet is the most fantastic invention in the last 50 years.
Television is right up there - but it has been warped and broadcsting is only accessible to the very wealth. The internet is an evolution of learning and sharing very advanced information.
As a web developer I do my part to share - admittadly I gain much more than I am able to give. People who simplify or minimize the importance of this technology revolution are not involved with it and mere spectators heckling what they do not sincerely understand.
Folks that think the internet - needs to be controlled for their own good are repugnant and very naive to me.
Also where is this you can get someones SSN and tax documents for 30 dollars??????
I love how non-techies just daydream up what is possible and what's not. So freaking ridiculous. the number one method of indentity theft is still having your purse or wallet stolen.
Online - you lose that stuff when you voluntarily give it to a theif.
The real misuse of the interent is the big cable and phone companies that are attempting to leverage their illegal monopolies to drastically raise the price of web hosting making it as exclusive and narrow as television currently is. Obviously the operator of the copper lines (subsidized by tax dollars) is just a very small aspect of the overall picture. However - since the bells have been allowed to recomglomerate in the last 10 years by the republican controlled administration - they will succeed to destroy legislation which previously kept this medium equal regardless of the company size.

Well, the internet is just like any other tool that is meant for entertainment/learning purposes. There will ALWAYS be someone around who is going to use it for malicious purposes. Always. No matter what you do, how you change it or regulate it, there will always be a way to use it for bad. I honestly don't think the internet was created as a means to hurt other people. I think the majority of people who use the internet are here to find the lyrics to their favorite song or to chat with old friends on myspace.
It's going to be hard to avoid someone wanting to rip you off or hack into your email or whatever...which is why you have to learn to be careful...just like you do in the real world. There are, obviously, people who are misuing it, but I don't think you can go so far as to say this is what the internet's purpose is. I mean, people kill other people with cars...but is that what everyone uses them for?
The internet is a wonderful place for learning and sharing, and it's a shame that some people have to ruin it for others.

Girl, Even I am loged in watching you on your web cam as I type. The government has programs that can watch you from your TV. Johnny nextdoor can get your bank balance. Why do you think the government opened up the military communication that was designed for them to be used openly as a public tool now. It is a spying ring.
Get real, if it is a public record anyone can get it you dont have to pay for it. If you do a search on your own name and find something you dont want then you can take actions to request the information is removed. Asking such a question is like asking if you think any bad guys shop at the mall.
Yes internet is un regulated! that is why you usually need to get several sources and judge for yourself if the information is accurate. As well as information that could harm there is also a lot of good information.

You know the abuse and over use of anything is not good. you know the saying "Too much of anything is not good for you" This saying exist because it is true. As a teacher and professor I watch students not even attempt to go to a library anymore for research papers. Everything is the internet. I tell them they have to use at least two books. What happens? They use online books. Now, I have to be more specific. I love the internet for this right here. Me conversing with you from some other place. The meeting of minds of all levels, cultures, ethinicity, races, genders, and not one of my favorites sexual orientations. I think the internet is good, but because as humans we always over due and misuse things, it'll (internet) probably be the death of us all, but at least we will have fun doing it (smile). PEACE!

your definetly right I noticed that, all you have to do is pay a certain price and you can get anything you want off the internet.i dont think that we would have to worry about that if there were less scandelous people in this world. but unfortunatly we do cuz people are nosy and like to take shi* thats not theres. other then that the rude people on here that talk shi* to other people and the fact that you have to safe guard it from your kids the internet is a good place

it can be a pretty dangerous weapon in the wrong thought pathes of peolpe. And there is little secrutiies that you cna take to protect yourself, because a firewall will protect what is in your system. Firewalls are hackable though, and a company that has the external sources to your life/information have the same firewall that is hackable as well. I won't fear what i can't control though.

Well Ann, like anything there is both good and bad to it. If you are silly enough to post your personal information online then you deserve to be nailed if that is the correct term.
It all depends on who is using what and where and how secure you yourself decide to be.
