this probably sounds really dumb but what is the purpose of a capo on an acoustic guitar?

It mainly just makes key changes easier when you're using open chords.

Its hard to explain this without an example so here goes.. A capo is mostly used to change the manner in which a chord can be fingered. For example If you where to place a capo on the second fret and then finger a G C and D chord you would actually be playing an A D and E. Each chord has been moved up a whole step yet you are able to use the same fingering.. Many people use a capo to make a certain chord they have trouble holding take a more easily held shape. Essential what you are doing with a capo is changing the key of the guitar, sort of, for example if a singer wants to sing a song higher than it was written you can move the capo up the neck of the guitar and raise each chord by a step, half step, two steps, whatever the singer needs.. Even though the chords have changed you can finger each chord the same as the original song.

Wow I can't believe I remember this from my guitar playing days. The way I see it you learn to play a song in a certain pitch. That means you learn the finger positions etc. for that pitch. By using a capo you can play the song in the same way but adjust the pitch. You don't have to relearn it.

To change the tune without having to actually retune it. If that makes any sense. Saves time and effort. It just makes it easier than holding all the strings down at the same time, same fret.

You move it up or down the neck to get a higher or lower pitch.
