Hey man... I had the same problem, my car stopped running after about a day... It is a transmission going bad...
Here are the symptoms...

You press on gas, the engine would rev, but the car will have a hard time going... The reason is because the transmission is slipping

Slowing down, it is going to jerk, and stop, still bad transmission.
I hope you have saved up 2000 dollars for it, or go to a junk yard and find one of those neon's and get the transmission out.
Sorry to tell you these bad news, I had the same thing happen to me and it caused a lot of problems in my personal life!!!

this could be caused by any number of things.

1) bad transmission mounts
2) transmission need to be flushed (about $150 at your local shop, 200 ata dealer)
3) the transmission is going out. your shop or dealer will tell you if it is a possibility after you take it in for the flush, considering they get paid to upsell your work.

another question, are you manually shifting it into 1, because if you are that will cause it to shift hard every time.

First gear is not engaging properly. Go and have a transmission oil/filter change and see if it improves.
