Well, this is the time of the year to prune them back to make room for new growth. I have the same problem with the people buried in my garden about the hat thing, but I just ignore them, I mean what are they gonna do their buried up their necks for crying out loud.

bring them a catalog, and let them pick out hats. or, bring them an array of hats and let them all choose. (be sure to keep their heads warm, as it is February and a bit chilly in some places.)
No reason to let your garden people be less fashionable!
