Okay, I have this friend, she's 18. She currently lives with her parents and younger sister in Puerto Rico. She's dying to come live with me in Florida. She's in school right now getting a certificate in Culinary Arts. My mom informed me that the cafeteria where she works had just opened up and they're looking for chefs. She told me to tell my friend about it.
I was talking to a friend about what a great opportunity it would be for my other friend. He was telling me that she can't go because her father wouldn't let her. I told him that she's 18 and able to make that decision on her own and that it's not his choice, plus, I think he'd allow it considering it's a good paying job.
My question is, is my friend legally able to make the decision to come to FL and take the job on her own, or does her father still have legal standing over the issue?
Thank you in advance.

The friend I was talking to about it said that she'd need to be 21 in order to make the decision on her own.

18 is the adult standard for almost everything, notable exception being consumption of alcohol. She is old enough to leave without her parents' permission, but she may not be financially able to do it alone. Airfare/moving expenses, plus getting settled in FL will not be cheap. She needs to consider these things. I think her best bet is to try to get her parents to help her make the move, by explaining all of the benefits of the situation.

In the United States, you are an adult when you become 18, but you cant drink. Here in PR, you can drink when you're 18, but you are not legally an adult until you reach the age of 21. So those of you who said that legally you're an adult at 18 are wrong if you're talking about PR. Legally, her father can demand that your friend come back.

As long as he still lives with his parents, they still had all the rights to make decision for your friend, but if your friend thinks he can make it on his own and face whatever consequences he would have to face upon making up his own decision then his at his legal age to do so,,,

Being 18 means that you are an adult and able to make your own decisions. Her father may still feel she is a little too young, but she has to start her life sometime and somewhere.

I personally think your friend is wrong. I do believe that once you are 18 your parents no longer have control over what you do. But I guess I could be wrong. If your friend is in doubt and really wants to find out, have her ask a lawyer....most will answer her question for free. As an afterthought.....Did you ever think that maybe your friend is making excuses because she has decided she doesnt want to move afterall?

Personally I think 18 is old enough for her to take control of her own life. The key is though she needs to understand what it will take to survive away from home. She can't just rely on you and others, she really needs to have a plan for all that living on her own will entail.

Well your friend is wrong legally, 18 is the age of maturity. But your Friends father may be paying for her to go to school so it might be a sticky situation.
