A real life Tragic Hero: Bill Clinton, so much potential and so much possibility. He rose to the highest levels and then couldn't keep his pants on and squandered it all. He legacy will be a compilation of late night comedy skits.

At six A. M off goes the alarm
The sleeper wakes in alarm.
The man rolls over
giving the clock a one eyed stare.
Momentarily glaring as if he would dare.

He slaps it off and throws back the cover
as he rolls out of bed. His eyelids hover
while he sways and rocks
“Damn,” he laments. “Seven o’clock
is just too damn early to work.”
In bed he wants to lurk.
He sneers at the clock
as he reaches for his sock

He gets slowly to his feet,
accepting his defeat
He had to get moving or he’d be late.
He had to be there before eight.
Thirty minutes to get ready, and to eat.
He passed up breakfast,
grabbed his case, moving to the car
he hits the street.

A twenty minute drive to his place of work.
Fighting to keep from going berserk.
“Why?” he laments, “Do I have to come to work
so early? The customers don’t begin till nine or ten.
Why not then?”

He works until break,
Grabs a donut and a cold drink, his thirst to slake
Finally it was time for lunch.
He ate too much.
The afternoon was rough.
At five he had enough.

Thus it went day after day
with nothing to look for except decay
Oh, there was an occasional vacation.
Retirement, a distant future prevarication.
Year after year only to be downsized.
Put in search of new career that never materialized..
“What to do?” is his lament.
Dire was his portent
as he regarded his dim future
when his heart suffered a rupture.
Now all that remains
is put him into a vault of cement
and give him his last lament.

The modern working man is very much the tragic hero.

There are many, but one of the first that comes to mind is Robert Syverten in Horace McCoy's They Shoot Horses, Don't They? He tries to do everything right, but still ends up both killing his best friend and getting himself condemned to death. That book was written in 1935 though, so it's not "modern", per se. A more contemporary literary tragic hero might be Humbert Humbert in Nabokov's Lolita, whose fatal flaw is his love for Dolores and nymphs, and whose life ends up being ruined as a result.
