So in the northeast - such as upstate New York - what do they do with all the snow once it's been plowed off the road. Is it just left on the side of the road, or is it picked up and taken elsewhere?

sometimes they will load it into dump trucks and dump it into lakes and rivers but only under permit by the state during times of declared emergencies

The snow is just plowed to the side of the road where it's left until it melts of it's own accord.

Annoying if you've just dug your car out and a plow comes and pushes a wall of snow into the way and you have to start digging again.

They have been taking up to the North Pole to repack what's melting so we don't all end up under 1/2 inch of water someday.

It melts and/or is packed down naturally. Lots of little kids play on it. A certain amount evaporates. I don't think it gets taken away.
