Each book in Wil Mara's series of "NFL novels" takes the reader into the behind-the-scenes world of the National Football League. While the storylines are purely fictional, the details are firmly rooted in reality.
The first book in the group, The Draft, tells of a general manager's struggles to obtain a promising quarterback from the first overall pick of the annual player draft after his team, a two-time Super Bowl champion, loses their own QB to an auto accident just weeks before the draft begins. Dozens of deals and countless hours of negotiation later, he believes he has his man...but life is rarely so simple in the high-pressure, zillion-dollar universe of the NFL.
The Draft released on October 31, 2006, and the second book, The Cut is due next year around the same time. Both will be published by St. Martin's Press. SMP's editorial and marketing staff have expressed their full confidence in this "exciting new and original venture," which has been in development since the late '90s.

So, you are probably going to be crossed about my answer.
But about football the best book ever is Nick Hornby's Fever Pitch. Fever Pitch is the story of a football fan. It is funny, interesting and if you read it even if you are hate or don't know football you are going to be understand the admirers of this sport.
The only problem is with this book that it is about the European football (also known as soccer:)))))))))))))))) Sorry, about it - but the novell IS so great, I had to offer it:)

I'm not even a huge football fan, but I enjoyed "When Pride Still Mattered : A Life Of Vince Lombardi ". That does go back in time, comparatively speaking, but not back to 1902.
"As coach of the Green Bay Packers from 1959 to 1967, Vince Lombardi turned perennial losers into a juggernaut, winning back-to-back NFL titles in 1961 and 1962, and Superbowls I and II in 1966 and 1967..."
"In the history of American sports, no coach has been mythologized as much as the Green Bay Packers' Vince Lombardi (who has been immortalized with, among other tributes, a rest station on the New Jersey Turnpike). Yet this fine biography from a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for the Washington Post is a blast of cool air among the usually overheated roster of sports biographies..."

Brian's Song, it's a book about the friendship between Brian Picolo and Gale Sayers. There's a movie about it that will make anyone cry.
