I wanted to know who people think are really powerful individuals, able to make people do things, or just have a lot of power

Their smart enough to stay out of the public eye for the most part but the lobbist work for them! Generally Owners CEO's/major sole shareholder of large corporation/head director of the board of trustee's etc! George Bush is bought & sold Daily hell Cheney his broker! Some names might be on Fortune 500 who's who list of the wealthiest people in the world! However people like Bill Gates & Warren Buffet are NOT the enemy they are Friendly!

That would have to be the tiny minority that controls the vast majority of the Western world's media outlets.

Five megacorps control 90% of the television, radio, news, music, film, and cable. In 1990 there were 20 major media corporations, and in 1970 the number was over 100.

Figure out who controls the media and you'll find the answers to many of life's questions.

George Bush is like a little dictator. He gets his power through intimidation and fear mongering tactics. People like him, though, are not really powerful. I would think someone like Billie Graham has power because people respect him.
