Can someone explain the history between Kane and the Undertaker? What is the back story?

I get a kick out of how you don't really get the answer you are looking for sometimes. You ask a wrestling question and all you hear is "it's only a storyline"...really?...no duh.

Here is the relationship between The Undertaker and Kane:

They are half brothers from different fathers where everybody assumed kane set his house on fire that disfigured him and killed Undertakers parents, but the truth is (that Undertaker revealed) that it was actually The Undertaker that set the house on fire killing his own parents and burning his brothers face.

Other than the storyline....nothing. They are not Brothers....they even came from different associations. Kane was "Dr. Issac Yankum, DDS" while in the Mid-South wrestling, run by Jerry Lawler. He was Lawlers personal body guard before coming to the WWF. 'Taker was part of "The SkyScrapers" with Sid Vicious in the old WCW before coming to the WWF. He used his real name...."Mean" Mark Callous then.

At the time when wrestling was starting to come down in the ratings war, thus WCW being on it's way out, people like Steve Austin were on top--since that made the "legends" such as Undertaker a bit outdated they had to come up with new stories and keep them fresh in the minds of fans. What follows is a brief description of the history.

A wrestler named Issac Yankem (demented dentist) was unpopular, so they brought his character out of the spotlight and replaced him with a mystery character that would be a link to the Undertaker's past--one that Paul Bearer threatened to reveal if Undertaker didn't abide by his wishes.

Undertaker refused to go along with Paul Bearer and so in a fit of rage Taker was forced to go head to head with his worst nightmare--his past. During the Hell in a Cell match against Shawn Michaels (at the time a member of Degeneration X and champion) the Undertaker was about to get the victory when the lights went out, fire shot from around the ring area, and out walked a masked Kane with Paul Bearer. He ripped the cage door from the hinges and basically tombstoned the Undertaker. After Kane left, Shawn rolled over and pinned the Undertaker for the victory--the next night on RAW Shawn came down from the ceiling and proceeded to burn the Undertaker's clothes.

Shortly after that the feud between Undertaker and Kane began, and concluded with the Inferno match. Kane and Undertaker then went seperate ways, and Kane became a singles competitor while Undertaker went on to be known as the American Bad ***. Undertaker went around the ring on his motorcycle while Kane still remained a stagnant character--dominating within the ring.

After the Monday Night Wars the Undertaker was forced to become part of the draft picks that were going on (via the purchase of WCW and ECW by Vince McMahon) therefore with the diminishing of Taker's popularity (in part to the ABA character) he was sent to Smackdown. Kane continued to feud in RAW, but soon the character needed a boost, and thus the match for the mask came about. In the end Kane was stripped of his mask and what we now see was revealed. After that Kane became known as even more demented when he did a story involving Matt Hardy, Lita, and the unborn child that Lita was carrying. In the end Lita turned on Matt, married Kane, and had a miscarriage. Then she again turned on Kane and left for recooperation for her neck injury (creating an animal shelter), Kane continued in singles competition as his character slowly became stagnant once again.

Meanwhile on Smackdown the Taker was continuing to dominate and eventually decided to return to his former self, this with the help of his upcoming giant maches involving Big Show, Great Khali, and Marc Henry. The Undertaker returned to his former darker character and had Paul Bearer at his side, then at a PPV he placed Paul Bearer in a class entombment and dumped cement inside. The result was that the Taker character was back to his old ways and didn't have any humanity to hold his darkness back. The last tie to goodness was gone. Taker then continued to dominate in Smackdown while Kane was a descent competitor on RAW.

Soon Kane was sent to Smackdown in a draft lottery, and the two once again reunited. The new dark Taker, and the unmasked Kane became known as the Brothers of Destruction, and from that point they dominated the tag team circuit--never attaining gold.

At the recent Royal Rumble the Taker triumphed over Shawn Michaels to once again go on to Wrestlemania in the title match. He will be taking on Batista.

That is the histroy to date, and in a form of speculation I believe that Taker will continue his winning streak at Wrestlemania as it's been several years since he last held the title.

OK well UNdertaker accidently set the their house on fire and ran out the front door when kane woke up he found the house burnt he tried to go and save his family but he fell down the stairs and burned his cheek,arms and legs in the process.Kane was in a hospital for 6 weeks while having to deal with the death of his family he had a case worker named melissa vick and her daughter katie vick and himself became friends until one day melissa quit after her husband had died kane thought it was because of the kane family curse so he got a new social worker he left than he got this women she found him a home outside elpaso texas but the wife went crazy and tried to kill kane but killed her husband and herself before police could arrest her.So kane ran away back to his old town of marfa texas he went to high school lived in a shelter until he saw Katie in his school they became firends with an on off realtionship she died in a accident and kane ran away.He one day stumbled upon paul bearer and paul told him everything that happened the night of the fire kane went to spain to train and came back at hell in a cell 1997 and got revenge on his brother but he would soon find out that paul was his dad and that he made up the whole curse that had terrorized his life and him and taker made the brothers of destruction

They are not real brothers or half brothers, There not related at all. There father is not paul bearer. The back story is that the writers made them storyline family. None of these men have any relation. It is all in the storyline

I love the "Brothers of Destruction" It is so much fun to see them take on King Bugger and Finley. Did you all see King booger's face after that match when quincy Sharmell was trying to help him up. It was like saying "Honey did you get the license plate number?" Even if they are not brothers they are the best 'Brother of Destruction"
