I grew up saying the pledge and singing the anthem, I felt it was a little hokey when growing up and didn't see the danger when it was tossed out the window..but now I am changing my mind.

Citizenship is a process of indoctrination, like membership in any other group. I believe you should encourage children to think, question injustice, and prevent violence that they see in the world but they must first be a member with a stake in that nation. They will never feel a part of the nation unless you practice a tangible expression of membership.

I only know the feeling I get when I hear anthem or pledge and the sense of belonging I get during these expressions, and I see many kids who did not have this connection to their country and probably never will. It is not a mistake to recognize our flaws as a nation, but it is a mistake to deny a generation a genuine sense of belonging.

I say the above with absolutely no knowledge of the curriculum in California.

Fox News???? You have got to be joking! I believe that making children say the Pledge of Allegiance every day is indoctrination otherwise why wouldn't we all have to say it every day? Why just children? Why doesn't every office and every place where people work start their day with the Pledge of Allegiance? That, my friend, is indoctrination!
