I started my son on cereal and am slowly adding fruits and vegetables to his diet. Now that he has started this new diet he is not as interested in drinking his formula. It takes so long for him to finish a bottle now. Has this happened to anyone else once they started their babies on solids??

I do give him his formula first and then give him cereal with fruits or veggies. But I only give him the cereal meals 3x a day and supplement that with formula bottles for the remainder of the day. These are the bottles he is reluctant to drink for some reason.

You need to give the bottle as the first part of the meal, with solids basically supplementing the meal. The majority of his carlories still need to come from formula.

If you purchase cereal without added formula, use the formula from the bottle to make the cereal. You can also do this if making a homemade cereal (brown rice or oatmeal puree). Depending on how much cereal he is having, it will take care of some of that bottle.

Another issue may be that he is getting too much cereal or vegetable and isn't hungry enough for the formula. Just play with the amounts until you find what is right for him.

He could also be bored with staying still and drinking from his bottle when it is much more fun to play with mom or his toys. You can always try introducing an infant cup. My son gave up his bottle at 10 months and drank well from a cup. My daughters kept the bottle until over 1 year. Every baby is different.

I have noticed the same thing with my son. He gets formula in his oatmeal for breakfast and then to start lunch he gets a bottle and then if he is still hungry he will eat some fruit. but at lunch he only eats maybe 2 oz if we are lucky and I know he is hungrier than that. We are still trying to find the right combination throughout the day to make sure he gets enough formula. It's been a challenge. One thing we have been trying and it seems to be helping is holding off his lunch a little longer and it seems that he is more hungry and will eat more of his bottle. Good Luck!

Yes, that is normal. Once a baby is on solids, they are getting more in their tummy than just the formula. If you are concerned about how much formula he is getting, try waiting about 30-45 minutes after he finishes eating solids before giving the formula. His tummy just needs to digest the solids to make room for the formula.

you might try giving the formula half an hour to one hour after the food,up until 1 year the formula really is the best food for the baby, maybe put a bit less in the bottle 5-6 ounces then a bigger one at bedtime

I definately noticed a drop in her amount of formula being taken throughout the day, and at feedings.
She used to sit down and finish 6-8 ounces... but now she will have 2-3 ounces, and then another 2-3 ounces an hour later.

On thing is....with the solids..they stay in the stomach longer so he may not need as much....just keep offering and he will drink what he needs.....babies will only eat when hungy....and as I said...with the solids in there also...he may just not need as much formula.
