From the popular rectangular GUI control, called a Window.


Also, it may be because Windows 3.11 was so bad, people often threw their PCs out the window, hence the name 'Windows'

Maybe because of the interface ??? All the aplications appear as windows. The icons are not windows. The icons are small grafics used to represent applications(like the logo of a company) or the file type of a specific file.

When You are the owner of Microsoft like Bill Gates I guess you can name your product anything you want.
Could be it meant opening windows of the world via computer.
