before you do any of that you need to sit down and figure exactly what your going to do on computer what software and hardware is going to be required then start shopping around for you need, not what someone has on sale or selling over net.

I would go to Circuit City. They honor their warrenties unlike Best Buy. Right now there are a lot of computers on sale. They have really good HP PCs for around 300 to 500 with out the monitor. Also some total packages with the monitor, speakers and a scanner/copier/printer for about 600 to 900. If you just need it for small stuff, this is probably the best place to go in my opinion. You can also check them out online at circuitcity.com
By the way, I would stay away from Dell and Gateway. In my opinion, HP offers the best computer for the money. HP has excellent online and phone help that is unlimited for a year and you can buy an extended 3 year warrenty if you want later.. You don't have to right away. You can also go online to look at hp computers at hp.com
They use both the Intel and AMD processors. On that you can decide. If you don't really need a lot of power then a low end AMD would be the best way to go.

1st you must address your needs. What are you going to use it for first of all? Is it just for school, word processing, is it for business, just for surfing the net, or do you want to do multimedia stuff like pictures, video, or music. You may only chat, but try to think of something you would like to try to do that makes it really worth you getting your second desk top. Second, memory and speed are always important to a computer. Plus upgrade ability so you can add on incase you develop some bug that makes you do more on the computer than you originally planned. Finally, the best place I think for you would be either best buy or circuit city. They have good prices and good customer service policies. I hope this helps. Good Luck!

My two favorite brands are Dell and HP. I've had several computers from them both, and they are very reliable.
When I'm looking to buy a computer, a switch between the Dell and HP sites, and look for good deals. For example, both were offering free flat-screen monitors at one time.
For basic computer use, the lowest price computer that is highlighted at their sites would be fine. Please see the links below. If needed, add features such as a DVD-rom drive, CD-burner, etc. if you would like them.
Dell, for home or office, has a Dell Dimension for $359. You will probably pay a bit more to add features to it. HP has a "Everyday Computing" desktop for $329.99. FYI, they tend to compete and try to beat each other's prices.
After looking at those, compare and see who offers things like a free printer, flatscreen monitor, etc. That's the one I'd recommend.

Good question. Dell is the cheapest computer maker, where you can buy a second desktop for around $500. Mac makes a computer that comes without a screen or keyboard for around the same. The good thing about Macs, though, is that they don't get viruses!
With Dell, you pay for what you get. Be prepared to have to buy another computer within 2-3 years. If you think about it, it's cheaper to buy a more expensive computer that will last longer!
"Once you go Mac you never go back."

I think a computer based in Core 2 Duo processor is well enough for your use. I don´t know where are the best retail stores, but I know the www.newegg.com.
BTW, just look for large hard disks (more than 200GB) if you want to put some music and video files.

they are actually pretty good deals out now ~$500-$600 for an average PC. look for at the very least 512gb of RAM (memory) but try to get more if you can afford, it will speed up browsing the web.. (1gig suggested)
also get one with a processor of 2GHZ or higher.
a video card with 512mb cache should be fine.
i think HP (hewlett packard) has some pretty good deals. they are also pretty easy to setup!

the first thing to look for is a good processor at least 1.60GHz at a reasonable price.second. it should have atleast 512mb of memory.these are the two most important things to look for.spend 400.00 and change.
