An accountant will say "What do you want the answer to be?"

A mathematician will say "I believe it is 4, but I will have to prove it."

A statistician will say "The population is too small to give an accurate answer, but on the basis of the data supplied the answer lies between 3 and 5."

An economist will say "Based on today's thinking, the answer is 4 but the answer may be different tomorrow".

An engineer will say "The answer is 4, but adding a safety factor we will call it 5".

That was a pretty cute question!

A simple mathematical equation, with various answers.

The most obvious answer is 2 + 2 = 4. But other answers are possible. As (1 + 1) + (1 + 1) = 4.

Is this a trick question?

2+2 is a mathematical function that seeks the sum (adding together) of 2 numerals, in this case the first and second being the #2.

Now, if you want the answer, that's simple: 4

Thanks!

It's 5. Why?
2 + 2 = 5, for sufficiently large values of 2 is a reminder about the way estimation errors compound in numerical calculations. One example is when rounding is directly involved: 2.4 is rounded down to 2 ("a large value of 2"), while 2.4 + 2.4 (which is equal to 4.8) is rounded up to 5.
Trick question.

Two plus two is an incomplete math equation. You're missing the answer, but you'll have to do your own work. ;P Meanwhile, at my house, 2 + 2 = a full dinner table and a lot of laundry.
