No....the amount of files on your computer hard drive has no bearing on your speed. The only thing an external drive will do is give you more space and a great back up capability. Your speed or lack of it can be several things. RAM size being the major thing. Other things are processor speed, spyware, unnecessary "stuff" running all the time.

The most important thing you can do to make your computer run faster is to install more memory (RAM). You don't say how much you have, but with virus checkers and automatic updates, 1 GB is the minimum. 2GB is better. You should also check msconfig (search for tips on how to use it) to make sure you don't have a bunch of worthless stuff clogging up your RAM at start up. Moving infrequently used files to external storage will only help if you have less than 5-10% free space on your computer.

If you are running low on hard drive space (you have less that 1 gig of free space or 10% of the hard drive free) then moving the files would speed up the PC. Otherwise, probably not.

What is on your hard drive, not not determine speed. You can have a 9bg HD, or a 500gb HD, and your computer will still be the same speed.

The speed is all in the CPU speed (MHz/Ghz) and RAM. If your computer is slow, maybe you need to upgrade your RAM. You might even have a virus or spyware, if it was faster before, and is just acting slow lately. In that case, I recommend adaware, which is free.

If you are very low on hard drive space, it probably will help a little bit. Too many files is probably not your problem though, check for spyware and viruses and also perform a disk cleanup and defrag your hard drive. You might also want to check your available physical memory (RAM) and add more if needed.

alone, no but with other things it can substantially increase the performance of the computer, buy beware when using USB and other non-sata hard drives, fetching files takes longer. so performance can actually decrease if your not careful...

here are some helpful hints:

increase your RAM (todays avg. ~1gb/1024mb)

increase your paging file (emulated ram for PC)
[start>control panel>system>advanced>performance]
{initial size = 2048 maximum = 5000}

run adaware and spyware programs...

run antivirus and malware programs...

DO NOT LEAVE YOUR COMPUTER ON IF YOUR NOT PRESENT

If you are very low on available disk space, then yes. If you have plenty of space available, then maybe a defragment might help.
