No...it is not a life or death thing if the students can't check their myspace page at school. The world would not come to an end. There's plenty of time after school to do that (provided, of course, that parents allow it). I just don't understand why so many kids are on here asking for proxies to get past firewalls schools have set up. Please explain that to me. Seriously. I have myspace and while I can access it at work now, I wasn't able to at my previous job and I rarely get on here. I just don't see a need to. It's not going to disappear if I don't check it throughout the day or even days at a time (or more). Not to mention all the trouble you can run into on myspace (those pesky predators, myspace stalkers, rumor mills, etc.). I have yet to see a really good reason why a kid needs to get on myspace while at school.

Technically, MySpace is for people 18 and older. Most students in schools are not 18, therefore, they should not be allowed to check a site that is technically for adults. If a school allowed this they could be in a huge amount of trouble. Why should you be lurking on MySpace while you are at school? Taxpayers assume computers are placed in schools for educational purposes...the last thing students should be doing is checking out THEIR MySpace page. Especially when they need to have their nose in a grammar textbook.

And that's a good thing! School is mainly meant for learning, and banning social sites like Myspace is okay. It's disrespectful to a teacher if you're surfing the internet during class. Many kids today seem to have quite a bit of free time, so why not check your Myspace AFTER school?

Actually something like myspace could be a benificial teaching tool. If students and teachers could coordinate pages that allowed for free exchange of educational learning that would be a good thing. Common intrests groups could be coordinated where people from all across the globe could exchange ideas and projects could be coordinated. Wouldnt it be awesome if a group of kids across the globe coordinated a reaserch project and then were able to freely express thier findings. Talk about a kick ass way to develope educational portfolios and share them with the world. ( I think educational portfolios are a better way to "test" a kids knowledge rather than standardized testing)
Things like myspace are always going to be around and kids are always going to access them...in and out of school. (you always have those few that figure a way around the net nanny software on the school's servers)
Instead of banning it I think it should be welcomed yet structured in a way that enhances education. Teachers and students could come together for a common goal and learn something about each other in the process.
Unfortunatly things like myspace are banned in schools because as much as we welcome technology we are affraid of it. I work in public schools and have seen so many teachers that are affraid to even touch a computer. Sadly I think this is where were going to lose the battle with kids on motivating them to learn.
As educators I think we need to meet our kids half way. With technolgy the way it is we are becoming a generation where knowledge is at our fingertips, learning styles are changing and its time that people realize the old book, paper, pencil and test isnt working anymore.

I think it goes along with cell phones. It should be allowed during lunch. As long as no one else needs a computer, it should be fine. I don't get why some websites are ok (because I see lots of online games like gaia.com being played) but not myspace. I'm on right now and its because I am done with everything in this class. What should I do? Just sit around?

Who cares? Go to Yahoo and use the translation service for web pages. Voila! MySpace is accessible.

I don't think schools should allow students to do anything until they've learned the difference between "there" and "their."
