I agree that hunting whales provides so little benefit to a civilization that it's not worth the harm done to the world's population of whales. However, you and I are a trivial minority.
The primary motive for hunting whales is simply money. There's money to be made destroying the earth's resources. You can blame capitalism, or human greed. Personally, I blame the world's organized religions because "faith" legitimizes the faulty logic believers invariably use to justify their irrational actions. The Christian Bible gives mankind "dominion" over all the creatures of Earth. To most believers this means humans have God's permission to destroy the planet.

Apparently we can oil machines with something besides whale oil, so obviously the Japanese could too.
The Japanese also eat whale meat. Just as obviously, whale meat is not an essential nutrient. It is not even a big part of the Japanese diet.
The Japanese are gradually gaining an awareness of the value of whales, they are just a bit behind the rest of the world in this.

The Japanese demand for whale meat doesn't use up even the restricted supply. The Japanese government is making a promotional campaign for whale meat and talking about introducing it to school menus to increase demand but I can't see this a neccessary use of Japanese tax payers money, They then ask the IWF (bribing some 3rd world members) to increase the supply of a product they can't sell... If there's logic there I can't see it.

the hassle is the whaling foyer in Japan has performed the propaganda warfare in an exceedingly smart trend. In Japan, the problem of whaling is very virtually unreported and maximum jap do not even see it as an difficulty. even as the whaling foyer and is challeneged by potential of global communities, they play the nationalism card at homestead to get public help and in reality denounce their accusers of racism. something about jap custom seems to grant them a elementary lack of appreciate for flora and fauna no matter if or not this is whales or different species.

It would be nice if the Japanese and Norwegians didn't want to kill whales, but I don't think that we have the right to blather to them about killing one kind of animal or another. There really are more important things for us to be worrying about, don't you think?
As long as the whales aren't going extinct, then we don't really have any basis for complaint. I don't feel that whales have any more or less right to life than cows, say, or wolves, and most people don't mind others killing them. Some do, of course.
Not everything in this world is going to be *exactly* the way we want it, and we shouldn't expect it or try to make it so. It didn't work for Hitler, did it?

No they don't....however, the Minke whale which is the main species the Japanese hunt seems to be numerous enough to stand being harvested.
The other part of your question deals with spermaceti which was used to lubrication in precision instruments etc. It has been made sythetically for years, so no sperm whales are killed to obtain it.
