Buy him a savings bond. He will still have that when he 18. Clothes wear out and toys get old.

You could get him clothes or maybe a learning toy like a shape sorter maybe there are lots of things out there that are good but cheap. it all depends on how much you really want to spend and what the child already has. A sing a long bear is a good idea too i think he will enjoy that as it makes noise and thats what babies and kids love.

Good luck in finding something

Don't bother with babies r us, they're nice but expensive. A gift for a 1 year old is tough since they're only gonna be awake for about half of the party.
I would say go with something simple, a singing light-up toy is good but make sure to include batteries for it as a courtsey to the parents. You also can't go wrong with a set of old-fashioned wooden building blocks, my son got a set when he was little (he's 8 now) and he still plays with them sometimes and my two other little ones play with them all the time.

One year olds are starting to bring things to their mouth to gnaw on. Maybe find a teether that has different textures on it. They like to pick things up and shake them. Maybe a small (not so loud) rattle. I remember this toy that my sons had that attached right to the side of the crib. It had things to spin, slide, push, etc... It even had a mirror on it. They really played with those too. It was good for the fine motor skills too. Even at that age babies love to watch music videos. I'm not talking Barney, but kids singing and playing at the same time.
Toys for the bathtub are alway fun too.

I can't think of anything else, those just came to mind right away. I hope these help.

How about a savings bond? A one year old won't understand presents. If you choose clothes or toys, go to Target. They have great prices and a great selection! Another idea would be board books. They are stiff so he/she can chew on them. Target should have some of those as well.

If you are looking for a toy my suggestion is bristle blocks (I think they still make them)
They are big chunky blocks that stick together easily, kind of like an introduction to legos. They are great for babies chubby little hands and he will be able to play with them for years.
They don't require batteries, they stimulate the imagination, good for motor skills, they're not very expensive and trust me babies love them.

Please buy him books!!! Kids have ENOUGH toys. Another great gift would be linking chains, big enough that they won't fit into his mouth. They're toy-like but great for developing motor skills.
