First of all, it's not mandatory. Nobody, short of a judge with a court order, can force you to pee in a cup. Work place drug testing is completely voluntary. You agreed to it voluntarily when you took the job. And if you don't want to do it again in the future, you can leave that job. Nobody is holding a gun to your head forcing you to stay at that job.
I once worked at a company that did random drug testing. Never again. If anyone offers me a job with drug testing as a condition, I decline. And no, I don't use any drugs at all, except as prescribed by my endocrinologist. I just don't pee in a cup for anyone any more.

I DO own a business and mandatory drug testing is almost a given in our city. I cannot have delivery drivers who are stoned, or on a buzz, etc.. When my elder son was driving big rigs in Oakland, he became such a prize person to hire, that businesses kept trying to buy him from each place he worked for more money! This son was never on any drugs. When he told each place he didn't mind the testing at any time, he was solid gold. He made a LOT of extra money because he always tested clean. I think doctors and anethesiasts, as well as pilots and co-pilots should be tested before doing their work, each time! I think bus drivers, cooks, janitors should be checked. I know teachers should be checked, as well. (I know of one anethesiologist who was constantly on drugs. I never let him even BE in the room when surgeries for my family were happening. You CAN tell the hospital that you prefer NOT to have a particular person in the surgery room, and NOT have to give a reason!). I know of a medical assistant who gave the wrong drugs to an entire office of people while supposedly giving them shots to keep from getting the flu! This person was dismissed, after drug testing.
CMAs should be drug tested. RNs should be tested! Cab drivers, dentists, anyone who can HURT anyone should be tested.

If I owned a business I hope that I'd feel the same way that I do now: if drug testing is mandatory, every employee should be tested. I understand that some jobs are very highly paid and people's lives could depend on them (like the doctors, pilots, etc.) but that doesn't mean that they, as a person, are any better than someone who works at McDonald's.

I think that they need to do mandatory drug testing for all welfare recipients. Doctors won't ever get tested - most own their own businesses. Politicians would never make it a law that they had to be tested - pilots, railroad workers, truck drivers, bus drivers etc should always be tested on a regular basis. Some of the lower jobs that you list -it's about whether they are honest. Face it - many drug users end up being thieves to support their habit.

I am all for it. Having my own consulting business over 10 years, I ended up helping a lot of small business owners. For so many of those businesses employee drug use were a major problem. I am not talking about just drivers, but especially in industries like construction, health care, senior care, child care, education, small service providers (contractors, plumbing, roofing), security guards and many more.
Think about it, if you own a business in an industry that drug test (even to a limited degree), if you don't drug test then where do you think the employees that use drug will apply to. According to recent statistics I read there are over 10 million people in the workforce now in US that have serious drug abuse problem.

I am in total agreement with drug testing - not only in the work place but when drivers license is issued or renewed. I did own a business for a lot of years and, yes, the policy was the employees could be drug tested at my disgression. I only had 4 employees and they were so obviously NOT using drugs it was never necessary.
If you use and/or abuse drugs of any kind, you put everyone in danger, make everyones work load heavier picking up your slack. I wouldn't want to work with you, speak with you, look at you or have anything to do with you.

No matter what your job, wouldn't you feel better knowing that the person working next to you, holding the ladder for you, or driving past you on the hwy. is sober and free of any substance. I agree that it should be absolutely mandatory in safety sensitive positions, I also agree that the management shouldn't escape the list of random selections.
