He'll feel crappy for about a week. Side effect, He won't be able to eat any greasy foods without getting the runs for about 6 months. Other than that, that is pretty much it. I had my gall bladder removed in 2001.

He'll be sore for a while, the main thing is to modify his diet in future - he won't be able to digest fats very well, and if he eats fats, he'll have some unpleasant consequences! His diet should be low in saturated fats, and he should try to eat 5-6 small meals, not 3 larger ones.
As he can no longer absorb the fat soluble vitamins A, D, K, he should take supplements and perhaps bile salts to aid digestion.
I'm attaching a link for the type of things you can expect over the immediate few days post-op.

Assuming he has no problem healing (infection, etc,) he might have a little fatty food intolerance. Most patients adjust to this and actually do better with fatty foods after a few months. He might get some guidance from a dietitian before his discharge from the hospital.

Ask the doctor that did the surgery. Don't ask something like that on here because not everyone on here is board certified.
