... someone always comes along and goes 'SMI--LE!!!'

And then proceeds to lift up the sides of their mouth with their fingers?

IF I'M NOT SMILING ITS FOR A REASON! THE LAST THING THAT'S GONNA MAKE ME SMILE IS SOMEONE TELLING ME TO SMILE!!!

I dislike it so much too when someone tells me to smile too.
I say,I am smiling.
Why don't you smile.
That always gets them.
They should mind their own business.

Good question. Though it is rather rhetorical in nature, I’m going to answer it seriously anyway.

As always, there are several factors that come into play here.

First and simplest reason they say that is because they are, at the moment they say that, happy. People who are happy tend to want people around them to be happy also. As such, seeing you, they decide that you also should be happy.

The second reason is that they desire to express happiness. Part of the nature of happiness is that you want to act cheerful and shout your happiness out to the world. By saying “Cheer up! Smile!” or something like that, they can achieve this.

The third reason is a complete lack of empathy on their part. Though they have been in your situation many times before, it does not occur to them that you will not enjoy their cheerful comments. You rarely see a psychologist say: “Be happy! Smile!” and expect it to work.

The fourth reason is also quite simple. Everyone else does it. Whenever someone is moody, chances are one of the happier people will try to cheer them up in an annoying manner. As it is in the nature of humans to copy behaviour, this is quickly (and subconsciously) taken over by others nearby. Then, whenever they come in the situation of the “happy person”, they will instinctively react in the same way as they witnessed before. (If this weren’t the case, you’d often find yourself with a lack of words)

But unofficially? They're just stupid :p

There's nothing more annoying than a fool telling you to smile when your clearly feeling like shite!! You should just go over to them, give them a stern punch to the nose and then tell them to smile as it might never happen!!!

I would find it more annoying if they proceeded to touch my face - the question does get asked and I just have to be blunt and say "not in the mood" and walk away - because I know they will not be on my wave length at that given time.

How to make you smile sounds simple? After receiving your bellyfull of abuse about your carelessness, mistakes, laziness indiscipline and incompetence and all the rest of your failings, somebody in authority over you needs to say to you in a commanding voice "Wipe that f------ grin off your face"?

understand, this p-------es me of as well, as they dont know how you are feeling, or what is making you upset, Tell them how you feel and what the reason is or some then instead of making you smile or trying they may be able to help.
worth a think?

Oh I know the people you mean. They 're the ones who say things like:

"Worse things happen at sea."
"Cheer up, it might never happen !"
"Never mind, tomorrow is another day !"

I think they need to learn that sometimes a silent, sympathetic nod of the head is the best thing to do.

some people are ridiculously happy and think you should be happy also. my advice is verbal or physical abuse. To remind them why they should stay out of the way of people who are obviously annoyed.
