No wise guy responses please. I am well aware of my eyes and how they work, I am also not a parent, I am doing research and was curious what parents, who understand that they can't stand over their children 24 hours a day use to monitor their interenet usage, chats, emails, im's etc.

It depends on what you are trying to monitor. The easiest way is to look in the browser history. Make it a rule that they lose computer privileges if they delete it.

Beyond that, I would recommend using Firefox as the browser - it's free and open source. An easy to use add-on called AdBlock (and the Adblock Filterset.G Updater which maintains a list of sites to block) combined with Firefox's popup blocker will make all sites more child and user friendly.

We keep our computer in the dining room. When our daughter is online, we make sure the curtains between the living and dining rooms are open and one of us sits where we can see the screen. It's not close enough to impose, but it is close enough to keep an eye on her.
We also have a pop-up blocker, since we can't control those. Between those two steps, we don't have to use a blocking program.

Windows Vista has built in Parental Controls and monitoring tools, I would recommend upgrading to Vista from XP.

You can look at your web-browser's History file. Also, most wireless routers (Netgear, etc.) have features for viewing recent history as well as blocking certain sites and those with certain words in the address.

There is good softwear out there that kids don't know but with the kids growing up with this stuff don't be suprised if they figure it out before you do!
Best way is to watch them! not constintly but like while they are on it! jump in and check the history before they get a chance to detele them!

you may intrupt the game or site they are one but it won't go no wear and this way your a step ahead! but do it randomly so they never figure you out!

These round devices that you can use for surveillance purposes. They're color, high resolution, focusable for near and far view, low energy use, and self-repairing to a point.

They're called eyes. Watch your kid.
