To the Person who says that if you smell chlorine, there is too much. It could potentially be that chlorine was recently added, But the more probable reason is that you are smelling the result of chemical inbalance of the Chlorine. What happens is when you get too little "free Chlorine" you have this sensation while swimming that you "Smell" the chlorine. What happens is that as the human Body sweats, and any other liquids or fluids, humans produce and add to the water, you are helping to change the chlorine balance in your pool. So what you are Actually "Smelling" are called Chlorimines. Its the Chemical breakdown of the total "free" chlorine in the swimming pool Water.
If you have ever gone to a hotel indoor Swimming pool, you probably notice about 15 feet from the door of the pool, you "smell" chlorine. You are smelling the same chloramines, only instead of being trapped in the water, you are now smelling them as they have becomed trapped in the pourous objects in and around the pool area, like the Walls for example. So when you go to a pool and smell that chlorine smell, it is not that the Chlorine is too strong, you are smelling chlorimines, a breakdown of the chlorine chemical.

If you're swimming in a pool full of water, you would not be able to smell the bottom! Especially if you're under the water!
If you smell anything it's either chlorine or algae.
Too much chlorine makes it stink. If it's too low and haven't added any ph chemicals in a while, algae will grow and make it smell and slimy.

How does one smell the bottom of the pool while they are swimming? I would think you would get a lot of water up your nose and practically drown yourself.
