A lot of people have said that having 2 firewalls in use provides better protection. Also, I've scanned my puter for viruses (with nothing found), I've scanned for adware/spyware (nothing found), done a defrag, emptied temporary internet files, and cleard the cache yet my puter is still a little slow. Any suggestions?

I currently have Windows XP-Pro firewall, and also the Norton Internet Security firewall. I'm not so sure I entirely trust the Norton firewall.

You have Norton. That's why the computer is running so slow. And whoever told you it was best to have 2 firewalls at the same time, needs to get out of the advice business. Use the Norton uninstall and get rid of Norton. Then get AVG free, or Avast free antivirus, SpyBot and Ad-Aware for anti-spyware and anti-adware and your computer will run much better.

Cherynsky ... I tend to agree with Lucee, the second answer you received. While running two firewalls may be working, I'd consider yourself lucky. Running two firewalls usually causes conflicts and this may also be contributing to your slow performance.

Also, as Lucee began to say, there are some great anti-virus, anti-spyware, and firewall tools available. I won't recommend a particular one because I haven't tried any of the free ones yet. However, I HAVE read from several reliable sources that the best of the free protection programs do compete very effectively with the ones you pay for.

Note ... There are many things that can be slowing down your computer and it's not necessarily a virus or any kind of "malware." But checking your computer for those potential problems (viruses and other mal-ware) was a good start. Now you'll need to check a web site such as PCMag.com or CNet.com for a self-help article that addresses the most likely causes of slow performance.

Good luck.

It's always best to have as much security on your computer as you can afford. Depending on firewall settings.. Some of your internet traffic might be blocked by one firewall while the otherone lets it right on through.

for a firewall that runs on your local computer, just use one. more than one and they're going to stomp all over each other.

what people mean when talking about more than one firewall is hardware, e.g. you could have a TCP firewall that blocks IPs and an application firewall that blocks specific HTTP traffic.

2 software firewalls on a single desktop computer is a waste because they intefere with each other and eat system resources best is a combination software and hardware firewall.

You could try disabling useless services that will free up more
system resources and speed up your computer.
