I believe Valentines along with Mother and Fathers' days are a rip-off. Apart from being extremely commercial, I feel if you can't show you love to partner/mother/father and buy little gifts anytime of the year, then don't bother for the one day of the year you are told you should. Especially when prices for flowers etc are inflated. Your view?!?

You are right in some respect. All these fixed days are in fact becoming encreasingly commercial ripp off. Hence, they are excellent for the businessmen, good for those who want to be reminded about showing their appreciation towards their love ones and ripp off to their pockets and the pockets of those who reluctantly have to follow the imposition.
As such, most of the so called Seasonal complements paying have even lost their real significance.
Its sad, but its also a reality of our exploited world.
Allt the best!/

Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, Halloween.... if you buy everything that the shops want you to, you'll have no money BUT that is how the economy works.... Although the gold diggers out there do want a 4 quid card and everything else that more expensive over valentine's (Perfume, roses and even Desperate Housewives DVD box set!) it doesn't have to be just about what you can buy. The best valentine's day I ever had was when my girlfriend cooked for me. Yeah, I went down the present, card etc etc route but she decorated her flat, dressed up poshly, put candles everywhere and put on some quite music in the background. The atmosphere was great and not once did I think "but I wanted a £4 card and some overpriced cuddly toy with a heart on". Obviously, I'm a guy so this day isn't about me..... it's only about how much a guy can spend on the girl. Never the other way round. That's equality for you! My girlfriend and I always do something for each other, it's not just a one way thing by us. All these celebrations are whatever you make of them. Don't get sucked in by Clinton's or anyone else!

I think Valentines along with Mother and Father's Days can be what we make of it within. After all, if someone allows themselves to get ripped off on any given day it's a personal problem. I also believe that those days can all be considered "spark days" for those who have aquired a hardened heart.

I like Valentines Day & Mother's Day and Father's Day.
For my wife and I Valentines Day kinda sucked because we are both under the weather. But we still got to spend it together.
As far as Mother's Day and Father's day I don't think they are a rip off, I think they are 2 VERY important days to honor mother's & fathers. And for the roles they serve.

if youre a good shopper you can get roses at out of the way places for half price....My husband did that $22 instead of $40...he told me and theyre beautiful WITH FRAGRANCE TOO and the stores have ones that dont have a good scent many times! He got a small candle and simple card too which says Im amazing and we had a free dinner coupon we used when we went out....ITS ABOUT LOVE AND YES I KNOW HOW to save money!!

well i agree that we should already show them that we love them but i like those days because it gives us a little fun in our life and a day carved out just for that person. if you are a busy work person maybe valentines is the only day you can really get off and do something very special.

I completely agree. I cancelled Valentines at my house this year. It is just another holiday (like christmas, easter, Halloween, ect.) for corporate america to capitalize on. And it is a day you feel like you HAVE to get your loved one something, when it is a much more romantic to be spontaneous with that kind of stuff.

Well it is a complete rip - off because we should not need a specially named day to show someone that we love them!! we can do these things any day!! its just another way to bleed us dry of yet more money!
