My son is originally self-taught on drums (and also guitar and keyboard). We bought him a set of drums once he proved that it was more than just a passing fad. He went to college to do music performing and passed. Suggest that you find a teacher to assist you. Lots of practice will help as well.

My guy is a guitar teacher/musician and we have a drum set in our basement, he's been teaching me for while. What people will commonly do is find a teacher and pay for 1/2 hour or 1 hour once a week....it's expensive. My advice is to find a good teacher, take a lesson then play play play till you have everything down, maybe 2-4 weeks, then go back for another lesson. Don't commit to lessons every week, especially at first.
You will improve quickly, the learning curve is steep, but then levels out, its during these times that you just have to keep at it, then the curve will be steep again. You'll love it, and remember, hit em' hard.
Cheers

It really depends on your preference. Trying to learn from books can be more complex. But, it depends on which way you learn easier. I've been taking lessons. My drum teacher is great. Books seems more complicated cuz you can't talk to someone to find out what you're doing wrong. Some people learn easier by books. I guess you'd have to try it both ways and find out what works best for you. =)

It's definitely possible to teach yourself. I did, for about 5 or 6 years, by simply jamming with a band, watching drummers at gigs, and paying attention to what my favorite drummers were doing when I listened to CDs.

While it did help me to develop my own style, unfortunately I picked up a lot of bad habits which, when I eventually did decide to go for lessons, took a while to correct. However, I only went to a few months of lessons, just to correct any bad habis I had, learn a bit of theory, and since then I've been playing without instruction, for about 9 years now.

I'd definitely recommend going to a teacher for a while, to get the basics and make sure you don't develop bad habits. After that, go your own way.

If you have enough talent, the dvd's & books will be fine. I would take a few lessons though with an instructor to at least learn some of the basics. Check out interstate music.com. They have some of the best prices you are gonna find & shipping is fair as well.

Books and DVDs are fine but surely a drum set would be better ?

You can start on your own but if you wanted to get really good you would need a teacher to tell you what you're doing wrong.

you can learn from books and dvds...but teachers help you learn better. they can tell you what you are doing wrong. if you are doing something wrong that is.
