That's probably George of "George and Martha," a series of children's books about a pair of hippopotamus best friends. The books were written by James Marshall in the 1970's and 80's, and have also been made into a cartoon that aired in 1999.

George the Hippo was a character in a seventies UK children's programme called Rainbow.
