It was definitely New York or New Jersey because Tom Cruise was talking to his son about the Yankees VS. Red Sox rivalry. It was probably New Jersey as it was easy for them to get out of the city, while if you live in Brooklyn, they would have had to go through Manhattan to escape which doesn't make much sense.

Good question. I think it's either a Brooklyn sublet or New Jersey--along the outer city lines.
