I have always believed that everyone has an ultimate purpose in life. I'm not sure what mine is yet, although I hope it's something that will better the world or even the life of just one person in a very profound way. I think about this all the time and wonder if my life will be over once that purpose is fulfilled. Guess I won't know that until the time comes.
Excellent question!

God or no God. I think there will always be ultimate purposes to life. Being able to have children would seem to me to be a very good ultimate purpose. Kindness, tolerance are also very good descriptions for a person having a purpose. I think we may not be able to control everything, but I do believe we can change small things through love and kindness. No one has come back from death and told us if there is an afterlife, so we have a choice Live your life the very best you can, be honorable, if there is an afterlife you will go there, if you don't then you become dust and ashes. Belief is a necessity really, without some sort of belief system the world would probably be in more chaos than it is now, through belief of any type seems to make death a bit less frightening.

There is an unanswerable question as to "What would happen after that?" Whatever the destination, "then what?" is used like a fashion. "Till that" is not pondered by anybody, but "after that". When Rulers and administrators try to uplift anybody, the other part naturally come down. It is a result of broad look. The ancient man started searching as to "why this life is for ". (But the new generation asks it, but not try - they want to enjoy it. This is why the old Gurukula system taught each step and after making the disciple a master in it, the next lesson starts. We all use Cellphone, Radio, TV, why even for food - many do not bother as they think that by paying one or two coins, we get food. (Noone know how to make it in good condition or why it becomes damaged) Nobody bothers how the body being damaged and how to live with least damage, wear and tear. (All want to enjoy and it is MY WISH). VERY FEW ARE THERE WHO ARE SELF-SUFFICIENT AND REST LIVES ON "PAY AND TAKE BASIS". Electricity, water and all necessities are produced at somewhere else and no one needs how it grows or produced. And the answer became "pay and take". This tendency if taught through Educational Institutions, the future of human is predictable. Thus what I told earlier, the population increases and the earth is going to be a "laddu" and human like "ants". When the skeleton of 'Laddu' comes, the human and humanity would be vanished and we need not to bother it. However, there are certain inhuman beings born from time to time (Dharm_sansthapanaarthaya). DEATH IS AN ILLUSION AND ONE WHO THINKS OF THAT IS NOT LIVING - 'Uthishtata Jagrata Prapya Varan Nibodhata" This "Prapya" is the ultimate aim of human and all rest of the questions should after gaining "Prapya". HUMAN - when he is equal to a quadrupe - his physical body is perished and soul is vanished like the light of candle. BUT HUMAN who is proud of HUMAN and is living to be a BETTER HUMAN, lives on earth and achieving the goal of human and then, when possible, try to support others.

Since we evolved the ability of self-awareness and conscious thought, humans have been asking this question. It is why people fervently hold on to their religious beliefs. Believing in something bigger and grander than ourselves, that all this pain and suffering is actually meant for something, gives our very short lifespans a purpose.
Than science came along and the continuous search to discover why and how things happen and work gave us another purpose in life - answering the perpetual question of why.
But on a personal life, only you can give your life purpose whether it is through spiritual enlightenment or intellectual enlightenment.
When you die and return to the earth - do you want to leave a mark on the universe and know that that (what that is) is why I lived or do you want to be forgotten?

I ask this same question once in a meditation. Much to my surprise, The answer came clear as a bell.
It said I have placed you here to learn the true meaning of Love. What ever it was that was answering then told me something that really set me back. It said that I felt the way I did about certain people because I did not understand the true meaning of love. I protested and said that I did my best to love all of the people who were deserving of love.
It replied "yes that is your misunderstanding. You see love as something that you dole out in tiny little portions here and there to people who you have judged to be worthy of it. This is not love at all, it is only judgment". This stopped me dead in my tracks. I suddenly realized that what it was saying to me was true. This realization brought me to tears. It went
on and told me, "You treat love as though there is some shortage of it. It is not something that you can run out of. The more love that you give, the more love that there is in the world. Its that simple. The only way that there can be a shortage of it is if you hoard it and keep it to yourself."
It went on to explain, that "this is what Jesus was trying to tell you when he asked you to turn the other cheek, to judge not and to love your neighbor. He made no exceptions in these things that he requested of you. Why are you making exceptions, and judging some as worthy of love and others as not? Jesus fully intended for you to apply this love that you are to all, in a universal manner without any judgment of any sort". By this time the tears Were flowing freely. I was crying because for the first time in my life I Understood what the message Jesus left for us in the bible actually meant.
This has become my truth. I can't say what yours is for sure, but I have a feeling that it is probably similar.
Love and blessings

I'd like to think we all have a purpose as so many people say, but maybe that's not so. We're just here and have free will so we can make life whatever we want. Really IMO life's not fair! Make the most of what you have been given.

We are here for each one to realize their purpose in life and your responsibilty within the universe. That IS the purpose to life.
Once you realize your True nature, your True power and role in the universe you will be empowered beyond what you can comprehend today. But it cannot be told to you. You must discover it yourself. I can say right now, you exist to remember your True nature as one part of the collective source (God) and to explore your individuality in order to expand on the source when you ultimately return.
But to place such things in words makes it limited by language AND cheapens it by selling it short by portraying it as some concept rather than the universal Truth which binds us all as one.
The answer is right in front of you, the answer is inside you...always has been.
It is up to you to realize this.
Know Thyself.

I think our purpose in life is to continue to spread the word of our Lord. By talking about him keeps him alive in our hearts. As far as your "material" life its totally up to you and how you choose to live your remaining time here on earth. I do believe we start here first because we need to learn about God and his only son before we enter his Kingdom. Wouldn't you like to learn more about the person your soon to meet?

i will like to say that we all have some purpose for our life, but its great confusion until and unless we find what is the purpose is?
Life can look like total mess but finding ones purpose can make it look short for living.
For me life is b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l.
hope you find the purpose soon Best of Luck!
