My cat is an outdoor cat,he comes in every once in a while but he prefers the yard most of the time..well there are cats in this neighborhood that are territorial and always try to jump in when they come in our yard..he has learned to scare them away *not fight* just scare them. Well,he has always been healthy and sweet as can be.Me and my husband have not seen him for about 1-2 weeks now and usually when we call him so he can eat he comes running, this time nothing. The other cats come in our yard now but no sign of our boy. My husband thinks he died somewhere, but i dont wanna believe that. Im so sad and want him to come home..has this happened to anyone and there pet came back? do u think mine will?

i have had cats come back after 6 months. mine has been gone for5 months and im still hoping. Visit your local shelter atleast every 5 days (here they are kept for 5 days and then put up for adoption. Put up posters, kids like to bring things home. put ads in the papers and on the radio if you can. report to the humane society, spca, animal control, all the vets in the area.
i know it sad. heres hoping for both our cats
oh and i have heard stories of cats coming back after years. one in town here was reunited with its family after 6 years recently. there is always hope

I know what you're going through. Our family cat died 6 months ago aged 18 1/2. It would have been her 19th birthday 2 days ago. She had kidney problems not long before she died and things weren't looking great so I knew the end was near but it was still hard to deal with. It was easier for me though as she was living at my mum's and I live miles away from her so I wasn't there at the time which helped. I think had I been at the vet's with her when she was put down and been in the house afterwards seeing all her things like her toys and blankets it would have been harder. I got her ashes a few weeks ago when I visited my mum and they are now on my bookcase. I take comfort in the fact that she was pampered and well loved for almost 19 years and that she was a very happy cat. The end was fairly peaceful (preferable to a lot of cats' deaths such as being hit by a car for example - which was always a huge fear for me) and she is no longer in any pain or discomfort. I still miss her but I'm thankful she was our pet and that we were able to give her such a nice life. Maybe you can take comfort knowing you gave your cat a nice life and cared for him right until the end.

Is your cat a fixed male? Unfixed males (and some fiixed) will tend to stray away for days, weeks, and even months at a time. Also how old is your cat. An outdoor cat lives 5-7 years less then indoor cats. They are exposed to all kinds of viruses and there is a chance that a vaccinated cat for rabies can still contract it, if exposed they must get another rabies shot as a booster. I live where a lot of wildlife is and we get a lot of rabies cases in wildlife. What have the temperatures been like where you live? There is the possibliity the cold got to him. You need to do everything in your power to find him. Put up flyers, place lost cat ads, check with local animal shelter, ask neighbors, etc. There is the chance that someone else took him in thinking he was a stray. Don't give up, here's two shortened stories of what we've gone through with a couple of ours.
We had a unfixed male that vanished for 3 months, he can home and went right to the vet to be fixed and have surgery on an infected leg. I figured he'd come home since he was hurt. He stuck around for another 6 months and vanished for another month. Came home and he was fine. Guess he needed to roam, we however did keep him up to date on all his shots. He has since passed from age.
With another cat, a fixed female, she vanished, 9 months later she came home on my one daughter's birthday. We took her to the vet (her rabies shot was over due) and discovered she'd been trapped somewhere and had worn her claws down to the skin, I mean she looked and felt like she'd been declawed. The vet thinks somone may have tried to keep her and she knew, she didn't belong there to have worn her claws down to nothing. He said it had to be quite painful for her to have done this. She'd always been a heavier cat and she wasn't thinner, which is why he believes she was kept by someone else. It took about 3 months for her claws to fully grow back. A year later almost to the day she'd come home, she passed away.
Whenever he comes home take him to be fixed, make sure he gets all his needed shots too. if he's not and make him an indoor only cat, this way you never have to worry about him vanishing again.

Cats should not be kept outdoors.
Good luck finding your cat, but seeing as you have decided to let your cat fend for itself among the elements and other aggressive feral (wild) cats, your cat is probably dead.
You made the wrong decision. I'm being hard on you for a reason. You should not consider any animal as a pet in the future. Concentrate on your life, instead. For the feral cats in your backyard, call animal control, or if your area does not have an animal control officer, contact the police.
At this point the last thing you need to be worried about is being injured by a disease-ridden wild cat.

When my cat first was allowed out, he stayed away for three weeks and now he will still go out and take a 'foray' and then come home. He may have even found a safe place to hole up or another family that is feeding him. You might want to consider asking your neighbors if they have seen your cat or even checking with local animal control or pet shelters. I hope you find him.

It's possible he could be out prowling for a female in heat. This is not uncommon at all. Males cats like to stroll and it could be that he has found a neighbor who is allowing him in the house, feeding him and "adopting" him as their own, too.
I understand... I am a mother who had my babies (2 cats) before I had my children! It is sooo hard to lose a pet. Keep looking, put up fliers, call the humane society/animal shelter and visit your surrounding neighbors.
Good luck! :)

There is many reasons to why he hasn't come back... someone picked him up thinking he was a stray, someone took him to the shelter, or he died... did he have a collar with tags on? If anyone were to pick him up, do they know who he belongs too? Check at your local shelters. And if you do ever get him home again I would never let him outside again... unless you dont care what happens to him.....There are so many feline diseases out there that can fatally harm your little kitty... please keep this in mind!!

Your cat should not be outside anyway. You are exposing him to SO many dangerous things. One of my cats got out once, and after a couple days, she came back. She never got out again...If your cat does come back, I would bring him inside and take him to the vet to make sure he is ok.
