One thing that really gets up my nose is inhaling other peoples' stale cigarette smoke against my will. It's about time to ban smoking in public places in this country and stamp smoking out once and for all. You know it makes sense! There is nothing worse than coming home from a bar or club after an evening out and finding that your clothes smell disgusting because they have been saturated with stench of smoke. I'm not the only one who is fed up of this, and I'm not some born again non-smoker, I just wish that I had a choice whether or not I came home smelling like a dirty ashtray. Another thing that I really hate is walking down the street behind someone smoking a cigarette. Every time they exhale out comes that cloud of stale smoke and bang, you walk straight into it and aside from crossing over to the other side of the street there is very little you can do about it. The simple fact is banning smoking in public places is the only way forward.

Ok people keep saying we live in the land of the free.. shouldnt we be able to choose whether to smoke ect... but thats just it shouldnt we be able not to have to smoke, just because somebody else does, arent smokers taking the free will of non-smokers away when smoking around them, why should not smokers have to walk away from a location just because somebody rudely decides to start smoking right next to them.. its just disgusting.. i hate when i stink of smoke cause somebodies cloud blows myway..

Fair enough if you want to smoke in your own homes, i mean totaly, do for it, your choice, but just not around people who dont want to breathe that air in..

parents who smoke around their child, arent you forcing you kids to smoke affecting their health during the most important growth and development period of their lives, isnt that cruel? taking away a persons free will?

I'm all for the smoking ban...
Lets say that I don't drink and that I don't smoke. If I had to choose between standing next to someone drinking or next to someone smoking, I would choose to stand next to the drinker. Why? Because I can stand next to the drinker and not fear for my health! I know some of you will come back and ask if I would rather catch a ride home with a driver who has been drinking or a driver who is going to smoke all the way home. If I had to choose between one of those, I would choose to walk home. Neither of those drivers are SAFE for MY health.

None of this is about YOUR health. It is about MY health. It is about the health of people who chose not to put toxins in their body. People should be able to CHOOSE if they want to destroy their own health, not have someone else destroy it for them.

First off you don't have any real argument except that it annoys you. I think crossing the street is a lot easier than banning smoking all together or complaining about it. I don't know about where you live but around where I live they banned all indoor smoking and everyone has to smoke outside 25' away from any entrance. But before this there were different types of bars, regular bars and smoke free bars, and it wasn't hard to avoid smokers. So why should over half the country give up something they enjoy doing just because you don't want your hair and clothes to smell like smoke?

edit: why should smokers have to leave if they light up near you? Just move. And what gives you the right to lecture parents about how THEY raise THEIR kids. You're contradicting yourself by telling people they should smoke in their own homes but they're bad people if they have kids around. Now you're just preaching.

edit: you have rights but why do your rights out weigh those of people who smoke?

I agree that most public places should ban smoking, such as restaurants, but it should be allowed in bars (because hey, it's a bar) - though nightclubs should probably not allow smoking, due to the associated fire hazards involved with crowds of dancers.

I'm not a smoker, by the way, and I am allergic to tobacco smoke. However, I think it's unfair to force others to quit their bad habits just because I think it's distasteful or unhealthy. After all, if we ban smoking for health & social reasons, we should ban alcohol as well.

As one of the born again ex smokers, (I gave up nearly 14 yrs ago) I can stand behind someone who lights one up and I feel I could inhale it for them.... but - I don't go to pubs and clubs anymore cos I'm so disgusted at the smell, and if we go to some friends who are still heavy smokers - we come back absolutely stinking... its showers and clothes in the wash before we can sit down.
I've always maintained good hygiene, but to think I must have smelt like that now horrifies me.

I think some pubs should be smoke free and others for smokers - like at the landlords discretion.

I am a smoker
Non-smokers have the ABSOLUTE right to be free from second hand smoke.
I'm from Cleveland Ohio and they are now eliminating smoking from all public buildings-goes into force in April
It is my firm belief that if you waited to age 21 -you would not choose to start smoke cigs
If we can show the youngsters that smoking is unacceptable in today's world -we can get more of them to not start.

Banning it outside is totally ridiculous. The outside belongs to everyone, including smokers. If you don't like walking behind them, then speed up and get in front of them or slow down to get further behind.

It should be up to businesses whether to be smoke-free or not and your choice as to whether to go into one where smoking is allowed. I'm assuming nobody held a gun to your head and pulled you into those bars and clubs?

Well, last time I checked I was an American which means I have rights also. Why should I be stuck on a patio to enjoy a dinner?? What about men & women who bathe in cologne that you have to smell while trying to eat?? Or, people who don't shower regularly?? Get a life and realize that you're not the only person on this earth and smoker's have rights also!!

Yes, ban it everywhere....it's not fair that I have to walk through a cloud of smoke to get into the grocery store. I think the law should favor me breathing clean air, not them being able to pollute it!

i'm not a smoker, but i think people should be able to smoke wherever they want. i mean, america is a "free" country, right? we are losing more and more of our freedom with stupid and meaningless laws like this. it's such a waste of time!
