I have an offer for a job 1 hr 45 mins away from home, working in a new industry with a group of people I have a great relationship with. I have another job offer, from my previous job (45 mins away), they are requesting I return after 9 months, great salary, 18K more than I do now. But I recently started looking again, actually just a few days ago. I wanted to find something a bit closer to home for the same salary/benefits. What would you do?

Keep looking for something closer to home but until then I would take the job that is only 45 minutes away. It's offering a better salary too. The other job is just too far away. eventually you'll stop thinking that your group of friends working there are not worth the basically 2 hour drive everyday.

Unless you are prepared to move closer to the 1 hr 45min job, forget about it
Between the commute and the working hours, most of your day is taken, as well as the addedd stress of the long commute twice a day
But if you are willing to relocate, A job you love, with people you like is very important.

Your other job 45 mins away, must like you and your work to come looking for you after 9 months. Think about it, this might be your best option.

Distance can be rearranged by moving closer to work.
The future of your carrier is what many think about rather than doing a job they really, really like, a job that you would do for no pay with people you like (only you never tell the employer that) is what really counts. Having to make this type of decision is very hard and I don't envy you.
I have been in the same sort of situation several times in my carrier and have made the right choice and at times the wrong choice. The wrong choice was easy to fix - I quit.

An extra hour of travel (twice a day) is a lot.
Costly on gas, wear and tear on vehicle etc..

The closer you can get the better. If you need a new car every 3 years the $18K after tax doesn't look that beneficial.

Pick the one that would make you happier. Don't choose on how much you get paid because that won't make you happy. Don't take a job if it's not going to make you happy and if you can't get along with the others then don't work there.

Closer to home, unless the extra miles will benefit you more later in life.

Consider which job I would be happy at. Who wants to be a crazed cubicle rat?
