I see questions on here all the time, asking how to get around filters in their schools computers, or a 12 year old asking how to make their mom let them stay out all night.

Did anyone ever think that the rules are there for a reason? The schools dont want you on myspace. Your parents are trying to take care of you. I mean, I do remember what it was like to be young, but if the rules were not in place, I would probably be in prison now. I broke my share of rules, but I paid in the long run.

So why do you think you deserve to be above the rules?

The rules prevent the youth in question from doing something he/she wants. We know we can't always get what we want, but we try. Many teenagers also don't appreciate their parents enough--they want what they want, and those annoying mothers always get in the way! Eventually, they'll sober up and learn that the world does not serve them everything on a plate.

It's hard to see when this line ends, though--when people go off to college, they often start appreciating their parents more and thus don't do the same stupid things. Instead, they break different rules, particularly "no alcohol until age 21".

(I'm nineteen, but I'm a goody-two-shoes, myself.)

I think deeeeeep in their hearts they know this. In particular situations, the same kids could expound their version of why rules are there, what purpose they serve (to help, to hinder). I think, though, that since infancy, their driving force is to push against boundaries, testing them and the parents who establish 'em, and the hedonism of our culture is so powerful. Thank god they're asking on the Y!Q&A forum, where folks like you and I can set them straight with advice that comes from experience - they really open themselves up for it here, don't cha' think?!
I paid for breaking rules too, worst of all by hurting my parents (before I learned to love them fully). Well, at least we can speak from experience when we counsel/advise others. You should've heard how I defended the parents' reasoning when my daughter said, "so-and-so's parents only give him 2 hours a week of TV! And he has to study a LOT!" (the kid is waaay advanced math, and likely headed for Stanford...)

We have created a culture of entitlement. Everyone gets what they want. Even the losers get trophies. If you don't like your grade, mom and dad get it changed. No one makes their kids work for anything anymore. So, they think they just get it all handed to them.

They think that way, because they're kids! They're immature! If you said that you never disobeyed authority when you were younger, you would be lying!
