Pay what you owe, and keep your self respect,and your credit rating,. Life is too short, you agreed to the lease, and legally , they could hold you to pay for the whole length of the lease.. So if you are just paying part as a cancellation fee, you are ahead of the game.

Nope.

I broke a lease over two years ago. I got a bill saying I owe $2,000+ dollars. Never paid it. They sent it to a collection agency who calls every now and then. I think I've paid maybe $100 towards it, but last i heard the balance was now $700. So dont sweat it.

It will however screw your chances of renting another apartment/house until your rental history is clear.
