I want to have my Internet Explorer connect to a LAN
high speed connection.
Now, the best I can get is "no connection" when I connect.
To restate the question, I want to asociate the web browser
with LAN automaticly, not dial up, or anything else.
Of course, the first answer that works gets 10 points.

First, your Internet Service Provider should have given you a CD that would configure your computer automatically. The settings that your ISP provided you would determine the procedure for correcting your problem.

However, I'm going to assume that you have a cable modem with a dynamic IP address (meaning you don't have an assigned IP [static]).

Open My Network Places, click the link on the left that says "View Network Connections." Now, right click the adapter you are using to access the internet (LAN adapter). Click properties. In the general tab, scroll down to "TCP/IP," select it, then click properties. Make sure it is set to obtain the IP address and DNS server automatically. Now click "advanced." Under "IP Settings," make sure "automatic metric" is checked. Click the DNS tab. Make sure the radio button "append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes" is pressed. the check box "Append parent suffixes. . ." should be UNCHECKED. The box "Register this connection's addresses in DNS" should be checked. In the WINS tab, "Enable LMHOSTS lookup" should be checked. Netbios should be set to the default (first radio button). Click OK. Now, back in the TCP/IP properties, click the "alternate configuration" tab. Make sure the radio button "Automatic Private IP address" is pressed. Click OK and close the open windows. Try Internet explorer now.

If you have no luck, you may need to use a USB drive to get the program WINSOCK FIX: http://files.snapfiles.com/localdl834/WinsockxpFix.exe

Further, if your ISP assigned you an IP address and DNS server, you will need to enter that specific data into the corresponding fields under TCP/IP properties. If you have that information and are unsure of what to do with it, feel free to contact me at popennell@gmail.com If you continue to have problems, you may want to contactyour ISP for help.

Take note....you can only do the ff: if you have an active DSL broadband connection. These won't work with Dial up connection or in Static IP address connection.
1. Re start your PC with the Dsl cable attached on the Lan Port.
2. Click start, run, type cmd, then press enter
3. type in C:\...........\...>ipconfig /release
press enter
4." " ' " >ipconfig /renew
press enter (take note that there is a space between g /)

Okay... :) First off is the router set to give DHCP? You may be on the wrong IP network. That can cause it. Also...YOu should set the option in IE so that it will look for the LAN connection first and then go back to the dialup. I think though that it is the first one. If there is link but no activity then that is your problem.

Tools menu -> Internet Options.

Click the 'Connections' tab.

Click 'Never dial a connection'.

IE will use a LAN connection if it is available anyway, and will now not attempt to dial up.
