It is easier to tackle a problem that is legal than one which is not. Tobacco can be bought in pretty much any corner shop and so is much easier to control. Illegal drugs are black market products and nearly impossible to track. Most western countries have a policy of making the likes of heroin, coke, etc illegal and kind of sweep the problem under the carpet. Sure, you can send people to jail for posession but usually those people are at the very bottom of the food chain and their removal impacts very little on the ones making the real money (very rarely does a cartel ringleader go to jail )

The government has banned smoking in public and the workplace etc I for one wasnt aware that drug users are annoying and affecting people by using all around us quiet openly.I am sure that the authorities will deal much more strongly with anyone who decides to take his fix in public than someone who lights a gigarette. The cost annually to western nations in tackling drug abuse is astronomical .

Gotta disagree with you.

I have no idea where you stand politically but I will tell you that the US Government spends hundreds of millions every year to fight drugs around the world.

This relatively new attack on tobacco is mainly a local or state thing. Not a lot is spent. Just a lot of new laws banning smoking.

The answer is that the government does tackle drug taking much stronger that smoking.

You cannot go to prison for smoking tobacco, you can for smoking cannabis.

You are not imprisoned for supplying cigarettes to under aged, you are for supplying any illegal drug.

The police will raid your house at 6'oc in the morning if they think you have drugs. They will only tell you to stub it out if you are smoking.

I heard this from my government teacher last year, so I don't know if its reliable or not. He basically told me government makes way too much money on drugs. He told me that vast amounts of money are made each year on this dirty business, plus it would cost millions to make a tougher law.
The U.S. is the most powerful nation in the world, but they can't keep drugs from coming into the us? please!
Also, I don't know if you noticed or not? . theres too many people doing drugs. I'll give you an example, I work on a restaurant, id say 80% of my coworkers smoke weed or do some other kind of drug. Seriously I think it would be easier to legalize drugs.

Where have you been anyway? The War on Drugs has been the most prolific war we have ever had. The US is holding many millions of prisoners of this war-we support them. We have spent billions of dollars on the war and all the machinery needed to send our police out to fight the war. We have created new agencies to help fight the war. We have used other countries to help fight the war. And guess what? WE ARE LOSING!! When will the government realize that we cant legislate morality.

in answer to this question, it is simply because they (the government) do not make any money through taxes from illegal drugs, yet they make millions of pounds through tobacco. that is also one of the reasons why you are limited by customs when returning from abroad.
see ya.

What's that? I don't see ANY tobacco company executives or convenience-store clerks serving LONG PRISON SENTENCES for selling DEADLY POISON to willing buyers.
