Very good point, sir. However, who are you to judge? I mean, you are making the assumption that this person is an alcohoic and is on the streets because he chose that life. He very well may have had some extreme circumstances that placed him there. Perhaps that person never drank a drop of LIquor in his life.
You are not required to give that person a dollar. But you don't have to pass judgment either.

Doing a little stereotyping aren't you? If you want to help, if he's asking for money for food, then go buy him a happy meal and take it back to him. That will show you if the guy is serious. Some people DO actually need help and are out there hoping for a good samaritin. Have you seen the segment in Bill Murrays Groundhog Day where he meets the old homeless guy. Something to think about while you're driving around in your warm car or gulping down a burger.

Being a Bum is his job. You would be shocked if you knew how much money those people make. And you would really be shocked to know that most of them ARE homeless and are run by a "pimp" who sends them out to collect money in exchange for room and board. Happens all the time.

I will sometimes give if I am with my daughter to kind of remind her that there are those less fortunate than we are blah blah blah and for some reason I am partial to those who have pets with them or are doing some kind of song and dance act I do steer clear of those who have visible open wounds and as for the lady who is always there when I get off the ferry stop calling me sir and then maybe I will give you some money for a hot dog

I am a sucker and always give them money, I don't do it in anticipation of what they are going to spend it on, they need money, I have an extra five, so I miss a few new outfits or out to dinner nights a year...so what...if he or she spends it on alcohol I feel bad but I think even if that is the case, they may, just for a moment, feel that someone cares about them...just my opinion.

I guess I am torn when it comes to this one. I believe there are those bums that really hit a bad time in there life and need help and really are good people and then I believe that there are bums out there that are choosing not to help themselves buy drugs etc

YOu don't need a justification to say no. You have what you have, and they have what they have. You are not their keeper. Just say no. A guy in a wheelchair once asked me for money. I asked him why I should give him money - what service had he performed for me? He got all pissed, but it made the point. We all have to earn our money.

If you have the dollar to give then you should give it. Once you hand him the money it is his to spend how he chooses. Just feel good that you were able to help. Not everyone can.

If I can give him something, I give, no strings attached. It's not my place to judge him or any of my business what he does with the money.
