You are correct. Not sure why we have got in the habit of dropping the 'Good' but I believe the term 'Morning' is usually used for someone you know really well and is therefore a very informal greeting.

It's all fancies that have no convincing justification. The word "god" itself is Indo-European in origin, was grammatically neuter and was only later corrupted by Middle Eastern nomads into a violent male tyrant.

With so many crabby people around, I just stopped saying the 'good' part of good morning. That way, I have recognized their existance but have not forced my opinion of the day on anyone.

It's the same thing. I do that all the time and it's quite common around here. It doesn't make it any less of a courteous acknowledgment. Same with saying "Afternoon" instead of Good afternoon. or "Evening" instead of "Good evening". No big deal. It's just lingo which seems to be the the new world order language of late.

My take on this is that they are not commenting on the status of the day, they just wish to greet you. So, if they are having a sh*tty day, if they leave out the "good" they can still greet you accurately. You think??...Either that, or they're feeling kinda lazy and just don't have the energy to use both words, so they shorten it to save the effort.
