The road to becoming a professional dancer is through intensive training with top teachers who were or are, themselves, performing professionals. If your teachers never had a stage career, then they will not have the necessary expertise to deliver rigorous enough classes or provide you with the proper corrections. You can only rise as high in your dance training as your teacher managed to go. So find the very best training possible, even if that means moving to a different city.

High school aged dancers who aspire to be professional should be taking classes at least 15 hours a week in addition to rehearsals for shows. If your local studio does not continue through the summer, then attendance at summer intensives lasting at least 4 weeks long is mandatory. The schedule for such programs should offer at least 25 hours of classes a week.

Even if you have an excellent local dance studio that offers year-round training, high school aged dancers also need to gain on-going practice at participating in auditions. Not only does this give you an idea of how you measure up against other area dancers, but auditioning skills - above and beyond mere dance skills - are what it's all about in separating the top trained dancers from those who get paid to dance. Competitions can only go so far in mimicking what the stakes are at an audition if they aren't for scholarships. It's easy for judges to give out ribbons and trophies. Training to become a professional means training to compete for limited positions. Thus you need practice in auditioning for scholarships, elite summer programs and roles in dance productions.

Ultimately, you need a supportive family that is going to pay for all of that training.

To be really honest and realistic, you really are way off the mark for training to become a professional dancer. Professional ballet dancers are apprenticing in ballet companies at 16 and 17 when their training of 20-30 hours a week at a ballet academy, 6 days a week year round is complete. For other types of dance you would be competing against dancers who have been training at top ballet academies and other dance conservatories taking at least 15 hours of class a week since they were quite young. 10 % of the best trained dancers get work and of those only 10% can make a living at it. If you could find the training, and professional training is not a small studio and graded or competition ballet, by the time you would be ready, it would be time to retire. It takes 10 years to make a leg as they say in dance. Most dancers retire in their late 20s for ballet. Contemporary dancers can dance a bit longer. If by professional you mean dance teacher at a small studio, maybe you could do that. The reason I know all of this is because this is my world. No reason you cannot dance for fun and the "joy of dance" * If a large portion of dancers trained at places like SAB can't get work, what chance realistically do you have? 25% of the dancers trained at Juilliard don't get work and it is easier to get a job dancing on Broadway or in a professional contemporary company than to get into that conservatory.

You need to go to a recognised dance school and take a course. Search for suitable schools in your area using a search engine such as google. You might want to watch episodes of Fame to inspire you.
Good luck!

First enroll in dance classes. Tell your teacher that you are wiling to do whatever it takes to be the best...your instructer needs to be shown that you are dedicted...If you love dancing then go for it and work hard and then you can be the best, but not without a lot of hard work!!!

dance classes and competitions can get you started. entering other competitions can get you publicity. majoring in dance in college will get you out there and seen by many major dance companys. otherwise, just try to talk to and/or apply the dance companys or anything like that.
