We all have a spiritual need. Some try to satisfy their void with entertainment, pleasure seeking, or by spending time with others. Everyone has at least one god, whether it is Self, money, or other.
I recognize the need to worship our Creator as did wise King Solomon of ancient Israel who penned these words: "The conclusion of the matter, everything having been heard, is: Fear the [true] God and keep his commandments. For this is the whole [obligation] of man." (Ecclesiastes 12:13)
I believe in worshiping Jehovah God on his terms as set forth in the bible, following the loving example of Jesus, and enjoy my ongoing study of truth, which embraces history, science, and archaeology. Why care about spiritual things? The following link is for an article that discusses the matter.

There are reasons all around us for needing or believing in God. Do you have the answer to everything? Of course not you are on Answers asking questions. Many people have questions as to what they were put here for what's the purpose of their life. There's no better one to direct this question to but to the creator. People who believe in God believe that he is a creator. When they have questions about their lives or questions about themselves they seek him. Do you walk on solid ground or on water? Of course we all walk on solid ground and in this life people need something someone as sure as the ground that you and I stand upon. Thats God! Parents die, lovers leave, children grow up, friendships can only offer so much. Money can only buy so much and its never been able to by inner peace. People that believe in God believe they still have a father even when their natural father dies, they believe they still have a friend to talk to, even after their girl or guy friend has just hung up the phone. They believe they have someone who will never stop loving them; someone who will call them beautiful even when their ugliest parts come out. Lastly people still need God becuse with out Him you are only existing but with Him true life begins.
..I am the way the truth and the life... Is what Jesus said in the book of John 14:6

The right question is why does God still need to reach out to us rebellious people?
Your question assumes that people are gods and that this "thought of god" is unecessary.
But if God is real - then you're asking the wrong question and you have to start with Him and wonder why He still searches for our hearts rather than letting us destroy ourselves completely.

We are not the masters of all things.
We need to be put in our places.
We need to have faith in something, because all of this randomness is enough to scare the crap out of anyone.
We need to feel supported whn even our own parents are gone, or are staunchly against us.
We need to know for ourselves,
but how often we've been taught that we're wrong!
So, our internal gods know peace when we are at war,
know how to war when we are cowering in the corner,
know how to forgive when we are seething in rage, and know how to love when we'd really rather collect dust in front of the boob tube.

Because many people have not yet looked into the void. They need transcendental meaning in a world with no transcendence. What is Truth but what we can see (read: experience), if it were to more how could it be known by even the wisest? There are many things worth believing in that are real (Read: experiencible) why not believe in them instead, I think it would be more rewarding.

People need God to give meaning to an otherwise nihilistic life and world, to establish and attribute senses of meaning, justice, and life after our transient earthly lives.

People still need God because they are still people and have not yet graduated to anything more than mere people.

Because they need to feed their inner self or their soul, Just as you have to feed your outer body. So believing in something spiritual or a god helps them achieve this.

why does anyone need to believe in anything? it provides a center... something to return to... our rock to hold on to in a storm of uncertainty... its just like those who believe in scientific law... it offers an explanation as to why we are here... and how we came about...
