It does work, but only temporary. After so many washes it starts to wear off. You might want to check with a crafts store to find out which marker works on ceramic and stays on permanently.

It will take a while for the marker to wear off, it won't wash off, but can be removed with alcohol or acetone. I've used fingernail Polish which if you already have some is cheaper than going out and buying something.

The craft store Michael's carries pens for ceramics, about $20 for a set of four. I'd use those, personally, since they're intended for ceramics. Permanent markers could fade or become discolored (my guess).

I think that it will partially wash off if you write it on the finished area. You could write something on the unglossed portion on the bottom of the mug- this way the ink absorbs beyond the surface. Unfortunately ,you'll probably have to write very small.

use a permanent marker but also glaze your mug to keep from fading. get a clear varnish or other clear glazing, its way cheaper than the 20 dollar pen set as referred to above me. 5 dollars a pen, it better write gold!

Won't wash off with water but will wear off with repeated washing.
Alcohol will remove the writing.
Why not just buy different colors- one for each person?

It'll wash off.
You need glass/ceramic paint from a craft store. You paint it on, then bake it for a period of time. I think the paint comes in "pens" too.

there is also a product suggested as Porcelaine, utilized with a broom, and then baked on your oven. it is a touch more beneficial solid than Perm-tooth, yet nonetheless needs to be hand washed.

If they are unglazed certainly any coloring will adhere, but then should be glazed. IT'S GLASS, hence no. Consider it's properties.
