For me it's a thing. Spider, snakes, centipedes - no problem. But ventriloquist dummies - those give me the serious heebie jibblies. Especially the ones with the eyes that move.

There's some new horror movie coming out that has a bunch of creepy ventriloquist dummies and stuff in the trailer. I was shuddering and every frikkin hair on my arms and neck was on end watching that stupid trailer.

I know it's totally irrational and kinda stupid, to be freaked out by ventriloquist dummies, but I can't help it.

I try to remember that irrational fear when I meet people who are freaked out by spiders and snakes (critters that I happen to really like).

Really stupid, but I'm scared of cockroaches. In general I've always liked bugs.
I can (intellectually) trace this to my childhood. Before the first polio vaccine was developed, when I was about 4, I heard a theory that cockroaches spread polio by from "human waste" which I interpreted as "waist," so I thought you could get polio from a cockroach getting on you. I knew polio was a big problem, so even though I had never seen a cockroach, I developed a dread of them. (BTW this theory wasn't correct, cockroaches are not carriers of polio.) Actually I had seen the big black cockroaches that live outside and are called "water bugs," but my parents told me they were not cockroaches, so I didn't know. I even remember using one of these big bugs to scare other kids. When I was 7, I had a sudden revelation, as if from God, that water bugs were really cockroaches, but I dismissed this as being my imagination. By that time I wasn't really worried about polio anymore, but I was still scared of cockroaches. I didn't really find out until I was 19.
I saw my first brown cockroach when I was 15, and was not unduly upset because I didn't get close to it, and didn't have to stay in the room.
A few years ago I bought a Madagascar hissing cockroach to get over my fear of cockroaches. It worked as far as Madagascar hissing cockroaches are concerned, but I'm still scared of the rest.....

If you've ever looked at a spider's face through a magnifying glass it will scare the pants off you-they are truly repulsive looking.

Just the thought of the Great White gives me goose bumps, especially being in his element and me out of mine. They are so big and powerful and one chomp and it's over. If I saw a Great White he'd be slipping and sliding in my poop while I run away.

Spider. I had one the size of my hand drop on my head in the Allegheny mountains and have been paralyzed by them ever since.
(I was frightened before the incident, but could still move in their presence.)
