Whether it is a car or truck, if you aren't wanting it to be all original, I wouldn't put anything smaller than a 350. Anything in 1978 were heavy vehicles. Anything less than a 350, it isn't going to go anywhere very fast with all the weight of the vehicle. If you want all original, then that is a different story and it really just depends on what it is. Hope this helps. For the answer below me, you are correct, not all vehicles were very heavy. I realize the nova and Malibu were pretty quick, but I was generalizing the fact that the bigger the motor, the faster it is. You know if you took a 78 nova it would be pretty quick, but if you had one with a 350, it would be even faster.

I have a 78 chevy k1500 it originally came with a 350. The 350 is a popular motor and is in alot of Chevys. My k1500 has a 383 stroker which is a powerhouse motor I own a 454 that I have considered dropping in it but I don't really see the point but to answer your question can't go wrong with a 350 it's a great motor plenty of power and it's not riddled with problems sooooo the 350 is a great choice even if its a lwb pickup or almost any car specially a nova

Your drive will bolt on just fine. The difference between the V6 and V8 drives is the gear ratio. You can use the drive from the V6 on the V8, the only change you will need to do is your prop.Because of the different gear ratio you will need a larger pitch prop. Before you start looking for a prop check to see what size is on it now.If there is a 19P on it now,I would try a 21P first and check to see if you are getting the proper rpm's at full throttle. If your rpm's to high try a smaller prop and if to low go larger.Hope this helps.Good luck.

not all the vehicles in 78 were heavy
malibus and novas werent heavy they were barely over 3k lbs
and they commonyl had 250ci six cylinder engines and were actually pretty quick i have owner several
it really actually depends on the axle ratio,
if you have a 2.73 axle and a small engine then yes it will be a dog, but if it was 3.73 geared and 250ci then it can actually be pretty quick, and surprisingly so
