Hmmm... depends on your personal interests. Make a list of what topics interests you in general then think of how they can relate to pre 1877 American history. For example do you like the topic of the Civil War ? American Revolution? Industrial Revolution? Native American expulsion from their lands after the Civil War? Religious tolerance or lack of in the early part of our history? Do you enjoy literature? American appalachian life, American Music of the early 1800's. US in Foreign Affairs. Maybe you can right about the New England transcental meditation movement? These are just ideas off the top of my head. You might want to go on line and do a search "us history term paper topics" then research a few of your top 3 topics that interest you. Part of writing a term paper involves having enough information for your topic.

This is such a rich period in US history, my problem would be narrowing it down to just one topic.

The American Civil War, the part that women played in the war, Black troops in the Civil war, any one of the many battles (Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Fredericksburg, etc). Any of the hundreds of interesting people that lived at that time, Jim Brown, Robert E Lee, Abe Lincoln, Soujourner Truth, Harriet Beecher Stowe, George Washington Carver -- open any web site or book on that era and the subject matter is unending.
