Use the Winmsd.exe Tool to Check the Processor

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. Type winmsd.exe in the Open box, and then click OK.

3. Locate Processor in the right pane under Item. Note the value.

• If the value that corresponds to Processor starts with x86, the computer is running a 32-bit version of the Windows operating system.

• If the value that corresponds to Processor starts with ia64, the computer is running a 64-bit version of the Windows operating system.

It will support programs compiled to run at 64 bits but, for these, Windows XP x64 or 64 bit Vista is needed. In this case, 64 bits refers to the size of Integer Registers, allowing them to count >4G, including for addressing memory >4GB - user space >2GB.

Even the earliest PCs supported 64 bits for double precision floating point numbers.

It will support 64 bit if that what you need to know, and it backward compatible with 32 bit. If you have say; Windows XP 32 bits OS, then it will run Windows XP 64 bit also.
