All they do is drive around in a circle. It takes no skill, whoever has the fastest car wins. If you have at least one foot and know how to make a left turn you can win a nascar race.

To October - How did they cheat did they make a right instead of a left? People cheat at everything that doesn't make it a sport.

To karebear - You said "NASCAR IS CONSIDERED A SPORT BECAUSE IT TAKES PHYSICAL ABILITY TO STAY IN A CAR THAT LONG AND RACE THAT LONG"
That astronaut girl raced from Texas to Florida do you consider her an athlete. She was able to stay in the car so long because she wore a diaper. Is that the secret to being a nascar driver, wearing a diaper?

Nascar ranks up there with horse jumping and darts. Unfortunutely it shows how lazy north america is getting. The top driver is the guy who can cheat the best and can figure out how to get out of the pits (cause tunring right is such a skill) The really talented ones show off by going around the track backwards after winning. Its like there trying to prove that they could turn right if they had to.

NASCAR is not a sport. NASCAR is an automobile racing association. Auto racing is considered a sport because of the competition in using the car to negotiate the course (yes, there are some road courses that have BOTH right & left turns!) in the quickest time, requiring extreme co-ordination of hands, eyes & feet, to control machine traveling at 190mph in very close proximity to others doing the same while experiencing tremendous wear and tear on the body due to G forces and constant vibrations from the road and wind buffeting. All this while under the mental strain of knowing a small error could be very dangerous. And doing this while 30 - 40 + others are right alongside you also trying to pass you.

Due to the amount of strength and endurance required to drive in such a controlled manner over the course of 300-500 miles, a person needs to be in very good physical condition to compete. You also need TWO feet as all the cars use manual transmissions. Automatic transmissions won't perform well under the conditions.
They cheated by having disallowed modifications to their cars.
This is the explanation I was given when I asked the same thing.
Now, why do I keep seeing poker on ESPN?

It is a competition
that takes extreme physical efforts from a team of people
The skill of a driver is much more than meets the eye---as all professionals---they make it look much simplier than it actually is !!
How would YOU know what it took to Drive one of these races let alone Win one ? What experience have you had to base your "notions" ? It would truly be interesting to know what business or occupation you do for your income and to know if you consider this "nonsport" to be such an easy thing to do---knowing what superb money these guys are paid--- why YOU aren't out there raking in the big bucks for this NON JOB of lesuire !!!

Do you know anything about the conditions these guys drive under. The heat, dehydration? Are you going to say that horse racing is not a sport? Or bull riding? Or barrel racing? Or Motor-cross? You really need to do some research.

NASCAR IS CONSIDERED A SPORT BECAUSE IT TAKES PHYSICAL ABILITY TO STAY IN A CAR THAT LONG AND RACE THAT LONG. A DRIVER LOSES ABOUT TEN POUNDS OF BODY WEIGHT IN ONE RACE BECAUSE OF BODY WATER LOSE. NASCAR IS A CRUELING AND HARD SPORT, AS IF ALL THEY DID WAS DRIVE AROUND IN CIRCLES ALL DAY--IT TAKES SKILL TO DO THAT WHEN YOUR GOING ABOUT TWO-HUNDRED MILES PER HOUR AND THERE ARE ABOUT FOURTY-TWO CARS OUT THERE DOING THE SAME THINGS AND YOUR ALSO TRYING TO ADVOID HITTING THEM WHILE GOING THAT SPEED.

In the past month two drivers have been suspended for cheating.
Doesn't that prove it is a sport?
