It'll take you 2 hours without traffic and there's ALWAYS traffic somewhere in LA and San Diego. Any time between 3-6pm in LA is bad and also drivng south at night on Friday. I'd count on at least 3 hrs.

If your food is from a store and packaged, it's unlikely that the food will be confiscated. - I've brought food with me to international locations and brought food back with me from international locations including London. But there are several grocery stores right near the LAX car rental locations. You should not need to wait until San Diego to get your supplies. All the stores will have reusable bags and reusable cold bags so the items stay fresh for the 2-3 hour drive to SD.

If you make the trip outside rush hour traffic it would be about a two hour drive.
